A FAST police response triggered by a Unified 911 emergency call led to the arrest of a motorcycle-riding man who fired his gun in the air and caused panic and alarm among villagers attending a fiesta in Merida, Leyte last Thursday, the Police Regional Office 8 said.
Shortly after the Merida Municipal Police Station received the 911 call, officers were dispatched to go after the suspect.
An ensuing hot pursuit operation amid the heavy rain and difficult terrain led to the arrest after five hours of the suspect who yielded a cal. .38 revolver with a spent cartridge and several live bullets.
According to the PRO8, the Merida MPS got a Unified 911 call regarding the suspect who reportedly fired a gun into the air near a fiesta venue along the national highway scaring local residents who scampered for safety.
The suspect then fled on a motorcycle but was tracked down near his residence after five hours of continuous tracking.
Philippine National Police chief Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. commended the responding personnel for their persistence and discipline, emphasizing that the result reflects the purpose of Unified 911—swift action that prevents danger from escalating.
“This is exactly why we push for Unified 911. One call from a concerned citizen can stop a threat before it turns into a tragedy. Mabilis ang aksyon kapag tama ang impormasyon at agad itong naipararating sa pulis,” the top cop said.
