  • Approximately 110 Lexus LX500D vehicles in South Africa are being recalled due to a potential transmission software fault.
  • A communication error between control units could cause engine over-revving, leading to a loss of power or transmission damage.
  • Affected owners are urged to visit authorised dealerships for a free ECU reprogramming to prevent risks of crashes or fires.

The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has issued an urgent safety recall for approximately 110 Lexus LX500D vehicles.

The notice specifically targets the LX500D-FSport and LX500D Overtrail models distributed in South Africa between 13 March 2025 and 16 January 2026.

The recall stems from a technical glitch in the 10-speed automatic transmission. If a specific component, known as a linear solenoid, fails, the vehicle’s electronic control units may fail to communicate the error.

This can cause the transmission to over-rev, potentially resulting in a sudden loss of propulsion while driving at high speeds.

Beyond mechanical failure, there is a secondary safety risk involving the transmission housing.

If the unit sustains damage during an over-revving incident, transmission fluid may leak. In the presence of an ignition source, this leakage significantly increases the risk of a vehicle fire or a road accident.

Lexus South Africa is offering a free solution to all affected customers.

Owners are advised to take their vehicles to an authorised Lexus dealership, where technicians will reprogramme the Transmission Electronic Control Unit (T-ECU).

This update ensures that any hardware failures are correctly identified and managed by the car’s onboard computers.
