Celebrated South African football coach Rulani Mokwena has been handed a two-month suspended prison sentence and a fine following his arrest at Houari Boumediene Airport in Algeria.
The 38-year-old was detained on Sunday while attempting to travel to Libya after parting ways with his former club, MC Alger.
The South African embassy in Algiers confirmed the arrest, stating that Mokwena had violated Algeria’s strict foreign currency regulations.
Reports indicate he was found in possession of approximately $15,000 in cash, doubling the legal limit of $7,500 allowed for international travel from the country.
Following a court appearance, Mokwena was prosecuted for attempting to move the funds out of the state without proper authorisation.
Although he received a suspended sentence, he has since been released and is expected to continue his journey to Libya via Turkey to finalise a deal with Al-Ittihad.
