Letran topples Perpetual, JRU downs EAC

LETRAN became the lone unbeaten team in the NCAA women’s volleyball tournament after tripping University of Perpetual Help System Dalta, 25-18, 25-21, 25-14, yesterday at the San Andres Sports Complex.

Judiel Nitura finished with 16 points, including two blocks and two service aces, while Sheena Sarie also scored 16 points as the Group B-leading Lady Knights improved to 5-0.

Gia Maquilang had a solid all-around outing of 13 points, including three service aces, and had eight digs for Letran. Natalie Estreller tossed in 16 excellent sets while libero Lara Mae Silva collected 16 digs.

Silva, who is also the Lady Knights’ captain, credited their squad’s chemistry as the driving force behind their undefeated start.

“Lahat may freedom maglaro, mag-isip,” Silva, who is on her final year, said.

Despite ending its five-match winning streak, the Lady Altas remained on top of the Group A standings.

Shai Omipon led Perpetual with nine points, while Charisse Enrico had two blocks for a six-point effort. Jem Menor and Camille Bustamante each had six points while Cy Almeniana, the No. 6 scorer in the tournament, was held down to five points.

In a duel of winless teams, Czarina Ramos had 22 points and seven receptions as Jose Rizal University outlasted Emilio Aguinaldo College, 25-20, 25-20, 23-25, 24-26, 15-8.

Men’s action saw EAC, behind Jan Abor’s 22 points, sweep JRU, 25-13, 25-23, 25-22, to chalk up its fourth win in six matches.
