Mnangagwa hails return of sacred artefacts as historic milestone

Zimbabwean president Emmerson Mnangagwa has described the return of sacred carvings and ancestral remains from South Africa as a “significant milestone” in the country’s journey towards cultural restoration and spiritual renewal.

“A moment of restoration and spiritual rejuvenation”

Speaking after receiving the artefacts, Mnangagwa said the repatriation marks a powerful moment for Zimbabwe.

He said it reclaims symbols that were taken during the colonial era.

“Today, we mark a significant milestone in our nation’s path towards restoration and spiritual rejuvenation,” Mnangagwa said.

“It is our privilege to welcome back the revered ancestral remains of our forebears, accompanied by the repatriated Zimbabwe Bird.”

Sacred Zimbabwe Bird returns after more than a century

The artefacts, which include the iconic Zimbabwe Bird, had been kept out of the country for more than a century.

Their return signals a major step in ongoing efforts to restore the county’s cultural heritage.

Zimbabwe Bird symbolises sovereignty and identity

Mnangagwa said the Zimbabwe Bird represents more than just a historical object.

He described it as a symbol of sovereignty and national identity.

He added that bringing back ancestral remains allows the country to honour its forebears with dignity.

“The Zimbabwe Bird’s return transcends the recovery of a mere artefact; it signifies the return of a national icon that epitomises our sovereignty,” he said.

The President stressed that laying the remains of ancestors to rest on home soil restores dignity and helps correct historical injustices.

He said the development strengthens the country’s cultural legacy and reconnects future generations with their roots.

Zimbabwe–South Africa cooperation on heritage

The repatriation also highlights growing cooperation between Zimbabwe and South Africa on heritage matters.

Both countries worked to address the legacy of colonial-era removals.

As Zimbabwe celebrates the return of its sacred symbols, Mnangagwa said the moment represents more than closure.

He said it marks the rebuilding of identity, history, and pride for generations to come.
