Adulting comes with a long list of responsibilities, but nothing prepares you for the emotional wake-up calls that come with it.
From friends that don’t show up when it matters most to the realisation that hard work doesn’t always pay off, growing up often means unlearning what we once believed about life, loyalty, and success.
On The Feel Good Show with Andy Maqondwana, the conversation turned to those tough, eye-opening moments, the kind that hit you out of nowhere and leave you thinking, “Wow, I really understand life differently now.”
One caller shared how a childhood friend didn’t show up for her when her mother passed away.
“I had a childhood friend who was part of every milestone in my life. She even lives across the road from me, but when my mom passed away, she didn’t come to offer condolences or attend the funeral.
“What hurt the most is that two years earlier, when her brother passed away, I made sure I drove to the township every day to support her. I even contributed to the funeral. That experience made me realise that sometimes, it’s everyone for themselves.”
On a lighter note, another caller said one of her biggest adult realisations is figuring out what to eat every day.
“My greatest realisation as an adult, Andy, is that I have to think about what to eat every day. Oh nkosi yami, every day I must decide what I’m having for dinner.
“And the worst part is, once you finally decide, you spend two to three hours cooking, only to eat for five minutes. You stand for hours, then eat for five minutes. What a scam.”
