AS expected by the Filipino people, education remains as the top priority of President Marcos’ administration.
Marcos has not shown any sign of backing off from his commitment to improve the quality of Philippine education.
However, in the view of many, including the private sector, if Filipinos really want quality education, then the government and the people should pay for it.
There is that urgent need to continue producing world-class professionals and workers, who are capable of competing with those coming from other exporting countries.
“Kung hindi ay baka sa ibang bansa na lang kukuha ng mga manggagawa ang United States, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Japan, Canada, at iba pang industrialized nations,” said a former migrant worker.
And it is certainly heartening to know that the Philippine government is willing to spend billions of pesos just to construct much-needed classrooms in various parts of the country.
The national government, through the Department of Education (DepEd), is working hand-in-hand with local government units (LGUs) to speed up the construction of classrooms.
Last Thursday, DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara said the partnership institutionalizes the long-standing plan to tap LGUs in delivering school infrastructure with the support of Congress.
During last Wednesday’s partnership signing at Malacanang, of the P9.6 billion earmarked for the classroom construction program, some P4.1 billion has been allotted to LGUs.
President Marcos said synchronizing national and local government efforts would produce faster, more visible improvements in education services.
Secretary Angara, on the other hand, said that local government executives are well-equipped to execute construction projects efficiently due to their on-the-ground presence.
Without doubt, this strengthened partnership is a move in the right direction as the six-year Marcos presidency nears its end.
