- NATJOINTS has warned that any lawlessness or criminal behaviour during the 2026 State of the Nation Address will not be tolerated.
- Law enforcement agencies have been deployed to ensure safety, while unaccredited members of the public are urged to avoid the Cape Town City Hall precinct.
- Road closures and airspace restrictions will be enforced as part of the security measures.
The National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) has warned the public that law enforcement officers will not tolerate any lawlessness or criminal behaviour during the State of the Nation Address (SONA).
President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to deliver his 2026 SONA at the Cape Town City Hall on Thursday.
NATJOINTS has urged those without valid accreditation to avoid the area around the City Hall.
“No disruptions will be allowed or tolerated by law enforcement,” said national police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe.
Mathe assured that adequate safety and security deployments are in place to ensure a peaceful, safe and secure 2026 SONA.
“All role players have commenced with their respective responsibilities in line with their mandate, with law enforcement agencies having mobilised the necessary resources to enhance police visibility to prevent and combat opportunistic crime before, during and after the address,” she said.
As expected, heavy traffic is anticipated in the city. As a result, the City of Cape Town Traffic Services has issued a road closure advisory to alert residents, spectators, and businesses in the vicinity of the Cape Town City Hall as a precautionary measure.
Motorists have been requested to familiarise themselves with the list of road closures and plan their routes accordingly using the provided link: https://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/Media%20Centre%20Assets/SONA-2026-Road-Closures-Schedule.pdf
Communities have also been reminded that the airspace around the City Hall will be restricted during the State of the Nation Address for both manned and unmanned aircraft.
The airspace will be monitored by the Airspace Security Team to ensure a strict no-fly zone for drones.
