Two of PlayStation’s Top Studios May Be Saving Their Next Blockbuster Exclusives for the PS6

Sony’s PlayStation 5 (PS5) has been on the market for several years now, and it’s in the latter half of its lifecycle. Despite this, we haven’t really seen many first-party PlayStation releases. While 2022 gave us games such as Horizon Forbidden West, Gran Turismo 7, and God of War Ragnarok, Spider-Man 2 was the only big release in 2023, and 2024 had no AAA releases.

Even the 2025 lineup for PS5 is on the weaker side for first-party games, with only Ghost of Yotei set to drop on October 2. Although we do have Death Stranding 2: On the Beach as an exclusive, it really isn’t a first-party game, as the IP is under the wing of Kojima Productions. This is making everyone wonder, where exactly are the new PlayStation exclusives? Well, it seems like Sony is saving them for PS6.

PlayStation 6 might launch with a blockbuster lineup

It’s fair to say that Insomniac’s Marvel’s Wolverine and Naughty Dog’s Intergalactic: The Heretic Project are the most anticipated PlayStation exclusives at the moment. These games were announced quite a while ago, but Sony didn’t give us a release date. This left many wondering when exactly they would be able to play these games on their PS5.

However, it seems like Sony is holding off these games for its next-generation console. During a recent investor presentation from PlayStation, it was confirmed that Marvel’s Wolverine and Intergalactic won’t hit the shelves this fiscal year. As seen in one of the slides, both of the titles have been categorized in the “upcoming” section.

Ghost of Yotei and Death Stranding 2 are supposed to be the major releases for this year, with both set to be released before March 31, 2025. Currently, there’s no definitive timeline for either Marvel’s Wolverine or Intergalactic, which means that there’s a chance that they might not even arrive in 2027. Jason Schrier previously reported that the Naughty Dog game isn’t expected to launch in 2026.

It’s been heavily rumored that PS6 will arrive in late 2026 or 2027. Considering the uncertain release timelines for both Marvel’s Wolverine and Intergalactic, there’s a chance that these games might end up being a part of the PS6 launch lineup.

After a year where Xbox has embarrassed PlayStation, Sony definitely needs a comeback. Kicking off the next console generation alongside such highly anticipated games could be a move to gain the upper hand over competitors.

Sony has also given an update on PS6

During a business presentation, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO and President Hideaki Nishino opened up about the future of PlayStation hardware, including the PS6. When talking about cloud gaming, Nishino acknowledged its recent growth and how it serves as an additional option for gamers in today’s time.

However, Nishino stated that most of the players still prefer playing offline without the need for an internet connection. He went on to focus on Sony’s “ecosystem of highly engaged players” on both PS5 and PS5, suggesting that there’s a huge interest when it comes to developing the next-gen console.

Although he didn’t give us any particular details about the console, Nishino revealed that the PS6 is at the “top of the mind” for Sony right now. Let’s hope the company can give an official look at the console in the upcoming months, as it’s certainly going to be a game-changer.
