Gardai and emergency services rushed to the scene after the alarm was raised.

The cyclist, a male in his 80s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Coroner has been informed and a post-mortem examination will take place.

The road remains closed at this time pending technical examination.

All drivers going to and from Kenmare need to travel via Killarney and Moll’s Gap on the N71.

This road is not suitable for heavy vehicle traffic.

Cops are appealing for witnesses to this incident to come forward.

A garda spokesperson said: “Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area between 1pm and 2pm are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardai.

“Anyone with any information is asked to contact Killarney Garda Station on 064 667 1160, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.”

Gardai confirmed that “investigations are ongoing”.

Separately, a couple were rushed to hospital following a crash in Co Donegal.

The pair were out walking in Buncrana when they were struck by a car earlier today.

The accident happened just before noon on the town’s Main Street.

It is understood the couple were walking across the road when they were struck by a car at a junction close to the local AIB bank.

It is understood that the couple and the driver of the car have been taken to Letterkenny University Hospital.

However, none of their injuries are understood to be life threatening.

The road was closed for gardai to investigate the cause of the incident.

Donegal County Councillor Joy Beard said she is praying those involved in the incident are ok and warned gardai are “not allowing any vehicles up the Main Street” of Buncrana.

The Cllr for the Inishowen District said: “If you are out and about trying to get into the town, avoid it at the moment. Hopefully it opens again soon.

“If you are even planning going through the town for some reason it would be best to use an alternative way around the town.”
