This Clever Trick (And a Bit of Luck) Will Let You Ride a Sandworm in Dune: Awakening

Step into the world of Arrakis in Dune: Awakening as you embark on your journey to find the Fremen and end the battle between the House of Atreides and the House of Harkonnen.

Since this game takes place in an alternate timeline from the books and the films, Paul Atreides is nowhere to be seen as he was never born. However, the Bene Gesserit still exists, and you take the role of an undercover agent from the organisation.

Naturally, you’d expect to ride Sandworms in a Dune game, but unfortunately, that’s not a feature in Dune: Awakening. But players have found a way to do so, and it almost requires as much effort as it takes to ride a real Sandworm on planet Arrakis.

Quick reflexes and learnt patterns can get you on a Sandworm in Dune: Awakening

The Dune movies and books feature the Sandworms as a looming threat, awakened by the sound of footsteps unless you’re following a pattern to get through the barren deserts of Arrakis.

In Dune: Awakening, Sandworms can be attracted to a location using thumpers, just like in the books and movies, but you can’t ride them to glory as it’s not a feature in the game, confirmed the developers, Funcom.

However, players have discovered that the combination of equipment, skills, and abilities like the Bene Gesserit super-sprint Bindu Sprint ability, the Full Suspensor Belt, and suspension gears like Emperor’s Wing, along with fast reflexes and a bit of luck, can get you on the Sandworm effortlessly.

All you need to do is study the attack patterns and behaviour of the Sandworms and time your abilities right to leap through the air and mount them. It will take a bit of trial and error to get it right, as it’s not a feature and might feel a bit wonky trying to mount them.

Of course, you can’t steer the Sandworms like Paul and the Fremen Riders do, but it’s the closest you can get to becoming the Lisa al-Gaib. A word of advice, though, avoid getting yourself killed by the Shai-Hulud because every item you possess will be lost forever if devoured by them.

Players channel their inner Lisan al-Gaib in the absence of Paul in Dune: Awakening

The players on the r/duneawakening subreddit have proved that you don’t need to be Paul Atreides to become the Lisan al-Gaib and ride the Shai-Hulud, the Sandworms of the Dune universe.

A Reddit user by the name of SgtDolphin has shared clips of him riding the Sandworms, even though it’s far from being an actual feature in the game.

This exhilarating two-parter video shows the player using a combination of skills and equipment to ride the Sandworms in Dune: Awakening, and all the replies hail him as the Lisan al-Gaib, or the Messiah. If you can ignore the faulty collision boxes of the Sandworms, you’re bound to feel like the Kwisatz Haderach himself.

It’s truly hilarious how life imitates art, as Paul Atreides was hailed the Lisan al-Gaib after he successfully rode a Sandworm and controlled it flawlessly, even though that was a sign of things going south. Although the same can’t be done in an official way in the game, it just shows the determination behind players to get what they want.

So, what do you think about players riding the Sandworms in Dune: Awakening despite it not being a feature? Will you be trying your luck at taming the Shai-Hulud? Share your thoughts and opinions in the comment section below.
