The Octopus Behind Jo Yu-ri Might Be the Saddest Spoiler of Squid Game Season 3

Squid Game is heading towards its final season, with fans eager to see how the jaw-dropping cliffhanger of Season 2 is going to be resolved. However, the show’s character posters have been released, and fans believe that they might contain a huge spoiler.

One of the posters depicting Jo Yu-ri in her role as Kim Jun-hee has fans already speculating about her tragic end in the show, which has never really pulled its punches when it comes to characters’ deaths. The death of Kim Jun-hee is directly linked to her pregnancy, with the theory that the imagery behind the character gives away her tragic fate.

As the poster for the character stands, there seems to be a paper octopus in her background. Fans familiar with Octopus biology have speculated (via Reddit) that, given the tendency of certain octopus species to die right after birthing their young, Jo Yu-ri will be on her way out of the show as soon as her child is born. Now it is important to know that Hwang Dong-hyuk, the show’s director, has told Entertainment Weekly (via GameRant) that the baby will be important, as indicated by the trailer having the cry of a child in its mix.

There is a nonzero chance that Kim Jun-hee will die during childbirth, which would be just the kind of twisted ending that the show could have. With the confrontation between the Front Man and Seon Gi-hun brewing ever closer, it remains to be seen if the final season of Squid Game will be as tragic and heartwrenching as fans are making it out to be.

The octopus could actually be heralding the death of a different character in Squid Game Season 3

While the octopus imagery relates to the death of the mother after she gives birth, it must not be forgotten that the child’s father, Myung-gi, is also present in the games. Myung-gi asked Jun-hee to abort the kid when he lost all their money in a crypto scam, and was weighed down by his guilt.

Now, it is possible that the game doesn’t see its regular end because that would mean only one character gets to make it out, which would stall the narrative momentum that the other characters still have left in the story, but given the nature of the show, anything is possible going forward.

While the show is known for its tragic deaths and emotional gut punches, it is very much possible that Myung-gi dies in the show. This could very well be depicted as a fake-out, such that the audience believes that Jun-hee is the one who is killed, only to be saved by Myung-gi, who would have died instead.

Not only would this bring both of these characters’ stories to a satisfying end, but it would also allow the writers to explore the moral complexities of the game further, given how the game’s organizers deal with childbirth on the grounds of the game.

Squid Game Season 3 hits Netflix on June 27, 2025.
