Taylor Sheridan May Really Be Gunning for the Oscar With His Next Movie as ‘Succession’ Star Joins

Taylor Sheridan may be trading the ranch for the red carpet (Oscar-style). The Yellowstone creator is cooking up a new film that’s already drawing awards buzz, especially now that a major Succession star has boarded the project. The new film’s casting move signals a bold shift, and possibly a big swing at the Academy.

With TS’s cinematic track record and a powerhouse ensemble shaping up, this could be more than just another modern Western. It might just be his Oscar moment.

Succession’s Juliana Canfield joins Taylor Sheridan’s high-stakes thriller F.A.S.T with Oscar buzz already brewing

Taylor Sheridan’s next film F.A.S.T. is coming in hot, and with Juliana Canfield in the lead, it’s already feeling Oscar-worthy. The Succession breakout and Stereophonic Tony nominee has officially joined the Warner Bros. action thriller, snagging the female lead opposite 1923 star Brandon Sklenar (via Deadline). While character details are under wraps, the casting speaks volumes.

The story’s classic Sheridan edge. A former special forces commando gets recruited by the DEA to lead a black-ops strike team against drug dealers who, inconveniently, are under CIA protection. Expect tension. Guns. And plenty of political gray zones.

Behind the camera, veteran cinematographer Ben Richardson (Beasts of the Southern Wild, Mare of Easttown) makes his directorial debut. The Sicario writer penned the script before his exclusive Paramount deal, but got a hall pass to deliver this one for Warner Bros. He’s also producing alongside David Heyman (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) and Jeffrey Clifford.

Set for an April 23, 2027 theatrical release, F.A.S.T. is shaping up to be a prestige actioner with serious Academy potential. And Canfield’s riding a wave, fresh off her first Tony nod and known for turning heads as Kendall Roy’s assistant Jess in Succession. She’s also appeared in The Assistant, Y: The Last Man, and The Calling.

From Broadway brilliance to DEA black ops, Jualiana Canfield’s got range. And with Taylor Sheridan behind the story wheel, this could be more than just another thriller. It might just be the project that takes them both to Oscar night.

Is Taylor Sheridan dropping the ball on his own Dutton lore while chasing Oscar gold?

The Yellowstone universe has always played rough, but 1923 might’ve just fumbled a crucial detail, and fans are starting to notice. Back in Yellowstone season 4, John Dutton tells Jimmy about his grandfather Spencer losing a leg. “The worst pain was in the toes of the leg he didn’t have,” he said. Phantom pain.

But here’s the kicker: 1923 never shows that moment. No leg lost. No mention. Not even a nod. Spencer survives war, battles Whitfield, and strolls into fatherhood with both legs intact. It’s a strange slip, especially considering it’s the only thing we knew about Spencer before the prequel. And it raises a bigger question: has Sheridan, with his ever-growing list of shows (Landman, Tulsa King, Lioness), lost track of his own lore?

Still, for Sheridan, it’s a balancing act. On one hand, 1923’s continuity cracks show the strain of juggling too much TV. On the other hand, F.A.S.T. proves he hasn’t lost his cinematic firepower. If he can tighten the reins on his ever-expanding universe and channel that grit into prestige projects like this one, he may just swap cowboy boots for a tux on Oscar night.

F.A.S.T. is set to be theatrically released on April 23, 2027.
