Last year’s region lock debacle by Sony had turned off most players from purchasing smash-hit PlayStation titles like God of War, Marvel’s Spider-Man, and more on Steam. Imagine not being able to play a game on PC just because of where you reside.
Sony introduced region locks to PlayStation-exclusive titles when they were ported to PC, which was met with major but deserved backlash from players who were waiting for these titles.
However, they seemed to have backtracked on their decision with one of their major release, Helldivers 2, thanks to Stellar Blade’s record-shattering PC release, and it feels suspiciously greedy.
Sony lifts region lock on Helldivers 2 after Stellar Blade’s PC release

Helldivers 2 was one of the many PlayStation-published titles on PC which was affected by unfair region locks set by Sony. For a game that requires a substantial number of players for the definitive experience, it wasn’t very democratic on the company’s part.
Naturally, players, both affected and unaffected by the region locks, were outraged at the restrictions as they couldn’t experience what was claimed to be one of the best multiplayer experiences simply because of the place they lived in.
However, it seems like Sony is finally heeding the call of players as they quietly removed the region locks from Helldivers 2 after the record-breaking release of Stellar Blade on PC.
Stellar Blade was the only PlayStation-published title on PC that wasn’t region-locked at launch, unlike other major Sony titles. A user named Ohhifoundarock on r/Helldivers broke the good news on the subreddit, much to the relief of the community:
Sony region restrictions may have been removed

Sony could not be more transparent with their greediness if they wanted to, as the removal of region locks from Helldivers 2 came in response to the incredible launch of Stellar Blade on Steam. They realised they could earn more from the locked regions, and hence proceeded to lift the restrictions.
Regardless of Sony’s motive, the Helldivers 2 community is relieved that others can play their favorite PlayStation title on PC and join them in experiencing it without worrying about being region-locked.

Although it’s worth keeping in mind that some regions, such as Vietnam, Syria, and Russia, among others, are still locked and unable to access Helldivers 2 until Sony makes a decision. You can check out the affected regions on SteamDB.
For players living in those regions that are unaffected, it’s time to join the fight for freedom and democracy across the galaxy!
Along with Helldivers 2, Sony lifts the region locks on more titles

More PlayStation-published hits are free from region locks on PC, and you can thank the Stellar Blade PC release for it. Titles like God of War Ragnarok, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, The Last of Us Part II Remastered, and more are completely free from regional restrictions.
The decision to lift these restrictions should have been made last year itself, or better yet, they should not have existed in the first place. But better to be late than never, and players on PC can finally jump in on the exclusives they’ve heard so much about.
This is certainly the right step for Sony, and it’s nice to see them heading in the right direction and opening up their library of masterpieces to more players worldwide. A huge win for PC players, and it’s the best time to be one.
So, what do you think about Sony’s reversal of region locks on PlayStation-published titles on PC? Born from their love towards players or just mere corporate greed? Share your thoughts and opinions in the comment section below.
