Sony Is Finally Fixing the One Thing Holding the PlayStation DualSense Controller Back

Console companies will show us a new controller every few or so years and tell us that it has the newest and best features. But the PlayStation 5 DualSense controller that Sony made has a lot of small issues, but one of them is a nagging one. You can’t pair the PS5 controller with more than one device at a time.

If you’re a gamer who owns the PS5 and a PC or some other devices, you’ve probably been annoyed by this problem before. But your worries are over because it’s finally about to change. Sony confirmed today that multi-device pairing with the DualSense controller is finally coming later this year. It’s late, but we finally have it.

Sony has finally decided to give us multi-device support on the PS5 controller

Announced today through PlayStation’s official social media accounts, the new update is set to allow DualSense controllers to connect to multiple devices simultaneously. That means no more digging into Bluetooth settings, unpairing from your PS5 to use it on your PC, or vice versa.

Players will soon be able to jump from their PS5 to a PC, tablet, or even a handheld like the Steam Deck without going through the hassle of re-pairing each time. We didn’t get a set date for this new feature, just that it’s scheduled to launch later this year. This is a big upgrade to the controller’s utility outside the PS5 ecosystem.

Sony hasn’t shared technical specifics, but it’s likely this new feature will be enabled via a firmware patch, which is how DualSense updates have been delivered in the past. Previous updates like this required users to connect their controller to the PS5 via USB, and it might be the same for this upcoming feature.

Fan reaction so far has been overwhelmingly positive. One Reddit user praised the announcement by saying, “Now I’ll actually use it with Remote Play since I don’t have to pair controllers each time.” Another person said, “Seriously! I ended up buying 2 extra controllers and another charging station just because I got tired of constantly having to switch between PC/PS5.

We need to wait for more details on how it’ll be implemented

Of course, it’s still unclear how many devices will be supported at once, or whether the feature will prioritize one platform over another when turned on. We also don’t know how the pairing logic will work across Bluetooth and USB modes.

We can also see how this change fits into the larger PlayStation strategy. We’ve been seeing recently that Sony has opened its platform to more than just console players. With the PlayStation Portal handheld, PlayStation Now cloud gaming, and more first-party titles arriving on PC, the company is diversifying its ecosystem, and this is a big win for that.

Between the current generation PlayStation and Xbox controllers, Sony has had an edge in terms of feature set, but its issues, like connectivity and stick drift, have made it so that the Xbox controller often gets picked over it for PC gamers. But with seamless connectivity on the way, the balance could shift.
