The Beach Boys co-founder, musician, singer, and record producer Brian Wilson recently passed away, prompting an outpouring of tributes and messages from across the world. Paul McCartney, whose bond with Wilson was rooted in 1960s creative rivalry, also joined in to pay a tearful farewell to the late legend.

Praising Wilson’s simple and brilliant notes as well as recalling their 2002 duet of God Only Knows, The Beatles legend wrote in a heartfelt Instagram post:

Brian had that mysterious sense of musical genius that made his songs so achingly special. The notes he heard in his head and passed to us were simple and brilliant at the same time. I loved him, and was privileged to be around his bright shining light for a little while. How we will continue without Brian Wilson, ‘God Only Knows’. Thank you, Brian. – Paul

Having inducted Wilson into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2000, McCartney deeply admired the Beach Boys alum and often praised him for his ingenuity. One of Wilson’s most popular works, Pet Sounds (1966), was highly influential for McCartney and The Beatles, who took inspiration from it for their subsequent albums (via Billboard).

The Beach Boys co-founder Brian Wilson was one of the most influential musical talents from back in the day, and is widely hailed to have created some of the most beautiful, melodious pop music in the history of the music industry.

Having suffered from mental illnesses like anxiety, led to schizoaffective disorder and mild manic depression shortly after fame, leading to visits to psychiatric hospitals in the late 1960s and medication throughout his life. Despite his difficulties and the challenges of living with such often exacerbated mental struggles, Wilson continued his musical journey. In 2024, he was diagnosed with dementia (via The Guardian).
