Owen Wilson’s Golf Comedy Dubbed ‘Next Ted Lasso’ Is Now Streaming on Apple TV+

Apple TV+’s new sports comedy series, Stick, starring  Owen Wilson as Pryce Cahill, is out now, and people can’t help but draw parallels with Ted Lasso. The show premiered on June 4, 2025, and three episodes are out already. It has a total of 10 episodes, and they will unfold 1 episode per week going forward.

The show is a perfect blend of heartfelt storytelling and humor in a sports premise. Does it ring a bell? Ted Lasso, whom we all know and love, has done 3 seasons on similar themes, and we can’t wait to see how Stick is similar or different from it. Stick also stars Peter Dager, who plays the role of  Santi, the golf prodigy that Pryce trains.

What is the plot and storyline of Owen Wilson’s Apple TV+ show Stick?

In Stick, Owen Wilson is seen portraying the role of Pryce Cahill. His back story is that he was once a promising golfer, but his career went downhill, many had a very public meltdown. He now works at a sports goods store, and sees the opportunity for redemption when he discovers a 17-year-old kid, Santi, who has amazing golfing skills.

He convinces Santi’s mother, Elena, played by Mariana Treviño, to let him mentor the teenager, and so begins the journey towards the US Amateur Open tournament. The show delves into the evolving prodigy mentor relationship and highlights shared expectations and post, and struggles of the characters. The show also stars Marc Maron and Lilli Kay in pivotal roles, adding depth and humor to the narrative.

Comparison and critical reception of Owen Wilson’s Stick on Apple TV+

The series has gained attention for its emotional storytelling and humor, but it covers a very similar premise to Ted Lasso. The critics have noted that the show explores themes of personal trauma, past failures, and familial issues. These are some common themes between the two shows. Some reviews are of the view that the show relies heavily on emotional arcs affecting the comedic rhythm at times, while others appreciate the honest approach.

The show’s tone and the underdog theme it follows have led to its comparisons with Jason Sudeikis’ Ted Lasso. Peter Dager has been praised for his performance as a kid with immense talent and unresolved familial issues. It seems like a huge step forward for his career, and we can’t wait to watch what the rest of the season entails in terms of brilliant performances.

The show Stick presents a compelling narrative of mentorship, redemption, and personal growth set against the backdrop of golf. Even though the show navigates themes of healing and trauma, it also offers new moments of warmth and levity, striking the perfect balance between comedy and drama.

As the series unfolds further, viewers can look forward to a journey full of triumphs, challenges, and second chances. While we wait for the next season of Ted Lasso, Stick has all the qualities of becoming a great addition to Apple TV+’s brilliant lineup

Stick is now available for streaming on Apple TV+(USA).
