One Piece: The Hate Against Nami’s Mother Bellemere is Unjustified

Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece offers a plethora of characters, and every single one of them has or had a role to play that is significant to the story. However, it is not necessary that every character is liked by One Piece fans in every situation. There are some characters who, despite their best efforts, are hated by some factions of One Piece fans, and that too for unjustified reasons.

One such character who has received unjustified hatred despite having a solid story in One Piece is Bellemere, the adoptive mother of Nami and her sister Nojiko. Bellemere found Nami and Nojiko in the Oykot Kingdom during battle, and she took them in and raised them as her daughters.

Still, some of her actions, especially during the confrontation with Arlong, were so contentious that fans developed hatred towards her. They believed that she could have easily escaped and have a life, but she chose to die in front of her daughters.

Bellemere’s controversial actions made One Piece fans hate her

When Nami’s backstory was revealed in One Piece, it was pointed out that Nami was an orphan of war from the Oykot Kingdom who was held by Nojiko when they met Bellemere. At the time, Bellemere was a Marine soldier, and she was battling pirates in the kingdom, but after meeting Nojiko and Nami, she decided to leave the Marines and raise the two girls as her daughters.

For the first few years, although there were some difficulties, the three had a happy and joyous ride through life. However, despite their best efforts, Nami and Bellemere would sometimes fight about their situation.

As much as I don’t want to think this, bell mere was stupid and a bad mother.

When Arlong attacked and demanded that every individual pay 100k berries for adults and 50k berries for children (each), Bellemere paid him 100k berries for her daughters.

This was a controversial decision because Arlong didn’t know about Nami and Nojiko, and Bellemere went out of her way to tell him that she had two daughters. This not only led to Bellemere being killed in front of Nami and Nojiko in One Piece but also marked the beginning of the worst phase in Nami’s life as Arlong used her to make maps. Because of this, One Piece fans have hated Bellemere for a long time.

Bellemere’s actions had a justified reason behind them

Although it is understandable why One Piece fans hate Bellemere for exposing her daughters and bringing a mountain of problems for Nami, the symbolic meaning behind what she did makes the hatred unjustified. Before hating Bellemere, fans need to understand that Bellemer and Nami constantly got into arguments about their situation.

This led to Nami pointing out that Bellemere was not her mother and Nojiko was not her sister, which meant that she understood that she had no blood relations. By sacrificing herself and accepting Nami and Nojiko as her daughters, even in the face of danger, Bellemere made sure that her daughters realized their significance in her life in One Piece.

The general opinion is that she could have let her daughters escape and pay her own ransom, which would have freed her. But considering Arlong’s raid on Cocoyasi Village, it would have been impossible for all three of them to be saved. Thus, even though Bellemere’s actions led to her being killed in front of Nami and Nojiko, she did save her daughters in One Piece.
