One Piece: Is Kaku Still a Bad Guy?

One Piece has plenty of heroes and villains, as well as characters who fall in the grey area. Kaku was first introduced as an antagonist and a member of the CP9, but it was soon pretty clear that he just acted out of duty and sheer professionalism.

Kaku’s character is very similar to that of Garp and Koby. He is duty-bound and does what it takes to complete his missions. But does that mean he should blindly follow an evil organisation? Does it make him a bad guy? Or just someone who is coping with the hands they have been dealt? Let’s find out!

Is Kaku an evil guy in One Piece?

Kaku has come a long way since the Water 7 arc. He has grown more powerful and has stolen the spotlight quite a few times, even though there might not be much in terms of character development. His mere association with the World Government isn’t enough to call him a bad guy, because then even Koby and Garp would become bad people that way.

Kaku might be associated with an evil regime, but he isn’t evil himself. He did not have a choice in the path he undertook. He was recruited by the World Government when he was a mere child. Then, he was groomed to become a ruthless assassin. He has undivided loyalty towards the WG, just like they wanted, and also did not show much ambition of his own.

However, he is not malicious like some World Government agents tend to be. He is nothing like Lucci and is even the friendliest guy in CP9. He might have never become a villain if the circumstances were right in the first place. Even when he fights against the Straw Hats, he accepts his defeat fair and square. He is loyal to the WG but not blind in his loyalty.

Spoiler Alert !!!
One Piece Egghead Island spoilers

In the One Piece manga, Kaku was last seen during the Egghead Island arc. He, along with Lucci and Stussy were given a mission to eliminate Vegapunk and return Seraphim S-Bear to Egghead. As usual, Kaku did his best to follow through with the orders, but Stussy’s betrayal became personal for him.

Although by the end of the arc, he warned Stussy of Lucci’s impending fury because of her betrayal. Even though he was betrayed, he still provided her with the information out of respect and probably because he still cared about their bond. But compared to Lucci, he was far less hostile towards the Straw Hats. He even cooperated with Zoro, though begrudgingly, once the Seraphim turned on them.

It is proven that Kaku isn’t an extremist of a character like Lucci, and the future could hold more positives for him. He has a clear path in front of him if he wants to defect from the World Government, and he can even become a rogue bounty hunter like Zoro. While he is still affiliated with the big bad organisation, he has never been an evil guy, and there is a high chance that he will change for the better.

One Piece anime is currently available to stream on Crunchyroll, and the manga is available to read on Viz Media.
