Naruto: Kishimoto Brutally Nerfing One Major Ninja Village Was Downright Criminal

Masashi Kishimoto introduced quite a few shinobi villages in Naruto, but not all of them received the spotlight that Konoha did. While some of them were completely forgotten, others were nerfed mercilessly. Sunagakure in Naruto is one of the biggest victims of the author.

While Konoha is generally considered the strongest of the villages due to its military prowess and Hokage, as well as strategic advances, Kumogakure and Iwagakure also had their own strengths. But somewhere along the way, the author forgot to extend the same amount of development to the Sand Village.

Masashi Kishimoto set up Sunagakure only for a massive letdown

Sunagakure, or the Land of Wind, also referred to as the Village Hidden by Sand, is supposed to be one of the Five Great Shinobi Nations. Gaara is from the same village, and thus, fans had this idea that all Shinobis from the place would be incredibly strong; however, the complete opposite was true.

The village lacked in sheer manpower, and even though it is supposed to be the home of talented ninjas, anyone other than Gaara failed to stand out. It might be one of the most difficult villages to attack due to its natural defenses, but its shinobis turned out to be unimpressive.

Once the Sand Village was infiltrated in the series, he ninjas turned out to be too weak. The only shinobi who are worth a mention are Gaara and Sasori. In the past wars as well, Sunagakure has been outnumbered as well as outskilled by other villages. They also struggle against opponents with specialized attacks.

The Hidden Sand Village was severely nerfed in Naruto

As established before, the shinobi of Sunagakure were extremely weak, and the village had been declining for years in both the military and economic sense. The village also used shinobi from other villages, probably because they were deemed to be stronger and more efficient. Even when they teamed up with the Sound Village, they were beaten by Konoha despite having some advantages on their side. The fact that Sunagakure could not beat Konoha even in a 2:1 battle shows just how weak its shinobi were. While the village might have been strong at one point, during Naruto’s era, it had diminished way beyond its past greatness.

Gaara himself was made to be a specialized weapon, probably in response to their weak military. This indicates that the decline of their prowess had been in the works for decades. The overall strength of the village has already been established to be low. The lack of talented shinobi put them at a great disadvantage in front of the other villages.

This could be because their natural defense system is so strong that they have not been attacked much. Thus, their priorities might have changed from military prowess to other amenities. Thus, for the people in the village, survival in the desert was their main goal. However, the powerscaling that the author introduced in terms of the villages is still pretty wacky.
