Marvel Rivals is no stranger to flashy mechanics, monetization tricks, and the occasional “feature” that makes you question reality. Among its arsenal of crowd-splitting updates was the skin customization system, allowing players to tweak costume colors with, oh yeah, another currency.
The idea was exciting on paper until fans realized it required a second wallet. Fast-forward to today, and it seems Marvel has quietly shoved this feature under the rug. New skins? Not a single one with customization support. Suspicious? Definitely. Deliberate? Almost certainly.
A feature too “custom” for comfort in Marvel Rivals

When skin customization was first added, it felt like Marvel Rivals was dipping its toe into true personalization. Finally, players could tweak their outfits beyond the default color palette… if they were willing to pay up.
The feature wasn’t just locked behind premium skins; it demanded a separate customization currency, turning what could’ve been a beloved fan-centric option into a paywalled microtransaction buffet. Unsurprisingly, backlash followed.
Forums buzzed with frustration as players questioned why they had to essentially double-pay for aesthetic freedom. And now? The silence is deafening.
Not only has there been zero communication from the developers, but the feature hasn’t appeared on any of the newer skins since launch. No announcements, no updates, no mentions in patch notes. It’s as if skin customization never existed.
They really just added this feature to a few skins and dipped

Players who spent their resources expecting more skins to follow suit are now left with glorified color wheels on a tiny fraction of their collection. Whether this is a soft rollback or just Marvel hoping we forget, the community hasn’t.
It’s hard to ignore the absence of a “feature” that was pushed with so much flair, only to vanish like Loki in a smoke cloud.
Primed for profit: The real game behind skin customization

While players are celebrating that skin customization is over, since we are not getting any new skins with it, NetEase is likely trying to make the currency more available with the next season (through BP or events). This is setting the stage for a monetization play that’s as transparent as it is frustrating.
If skin customization returns, it opens the door for a particularly cynical strategy: release skins with intentionally dull or off-brand color schemes, then charge players extra to fix them. And with heavy speculation around X-Men characters joining the roster soon, the timing is no accident.
Fans have long been begging for comic-accurate costumes, especially with the MCU and nostalgic ’90s X-Men designs gaining traction. NetEase knows that players will pay for the look they want, and this system could let them double-dip.
First, sell a mediocre to decent skin. Then, offer color “fixes” at a premium. If that’s not a cash grab, what is? What could’ve been a fun, player-first feature is being twisted into a calculated funnel for more revenue.
And the worst part? It’s not even subtle. If this is the future of Marvel Rivals cosmetics, expect your wallet to take more damage than your main in a 1v5.
