Kate Hudson Shed a Tear Remembering the Moment She Decided to Pursue Music

While longtime fans of Kate Hudson might know her as the amazing actress she is, in movies like Almost Famous and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, she’s started a whole new chapter of her career recently. In 2024, Hudson started releasing her own music, and that included her debut album, Glorious.

Looking back at the career pivot on Variety‘s Actors on Actors with former co-star and close friend Kathryn Hahn, she couldn’t help but get emotional.

“Kate, you’re such an extraordinary singer,” Hahn told the Running Point star. “I was lucky enough to be at your house, and you played some tracks for just a few of us [and] I just remember goose bumps.”

Hahn then continued to praise her bestie. “Because a lot of people don’t have the fricking guts to go for it; you think you’re in a box, this is who you are, but to put yourself out there with that much openness, it’s really moving to me,” she said. “And it’s inspiring to so many women. It’s like, you don’t just have to do what you’ve been doing; you can change! This is our one trip.”

Listening to Hahn speak, Hudson was already getting teary-eyed. “You’re going to make me emotional,” she said, adding in between tears, “I think that’s the thing!”

“In COVID, it really was like, ‘God, if I die, I feel like I’ve left things on the table,’” Hudson remembered. “It doesn’t matter what the success of them are, I haven’t achieved my full potential as an artist. And what am I so afraid of?”

“It doesn’t matter if it’s art or if it’s changing course in business, career, whatever, but it’s that moment where you start to feel your mortality and think, ‘What I am doing? What am I putting out there?’” Hudson reflected.

A big motivator, too, was her kids, Ryder, 21, Bingham, 13, and Rani, 6. “If I don’t have the courage to do something that I love so much, what are my kids going to think? What am I leaving to them?” Hudson said. “I want them to see me be fearless in my pursuits.”

“Even if it means something to one person, then it means something to me,” she continued. “Even if it meant something to nobody, at least I had the courage to do it.”

In essence, Hudson reached a point where she finally felt free and courageous enough to take the risk, no matter how poorly or amazingly it went. “It’s either going to resonate or it won’t, but it doesn’t matter at that point,” she admitted.

As big fans of hers in whatever she does, we’re glad she took the risk.
