J.K. Rowling’s Biggest Harry Potter Plothole: First Female Death Eater’s Age Makes No Sense

It goes without saying that while J.K. Rowling was able to create a story with Harry Potter that resonates with fans to this day, the author put a lot less thought into her world-building than most fantasy audiences would have expected.

While there have been endless articles about the economic tragedy that would be the Wizarding World’s monetary systems, even the ages of certain characters are so wildly all over the place that fans have been debating certain claims from the books to this day.

The age in question is Bellatrix Lestrange’s. The character was deemed to be part of a ‘gang of Slytherins’, which also included Severus Snape. However, this would not be possible given the sheer age difference between these two characters and when they attended Hogwarts.

Bellatrix would have been way too old to be part of Snape’s ‘Gang of Slytherins’

Bellatrix Lestrange, born Bellatrix Black, was born in 1951 according to canon source materials in the Wizarding World. That is where the problem began. Severus was revealed to be 36 years old in Order of the Phoenix.

While there was little information about the Black family, there are a few things that can be discerned pretty easily from the information the book provided. Nymphadora Tonks, daughter of Andromeda Tonks, who was Andromeda Black, would be 22 at the time of the book. Given that Andromeda is younger than Bellatrix, this means that the character had to actually be 42 (if you assume Andromeda had Nymphadora at 18, and Bellatrix was not Andromeda’s twin).

Given the possible eight-year difference between the two characters, it just would not have been possible for them to be part of the same ‘gang’, which can either be chalked up to a misreading of the books, or simply that J.K. Rowling did not think things through when she was writing the books.

Fans are divided over the casting choice for Bellatrix in HBO’s Harry Potter remake

There are a slew of characters that are waiting to be cast in HBO’s Harry Potter reboot, and one of them is Bellatrix Lestrange. Helena Bonham Carter played the character to perfection in the films, and now it is time for another actress to pick up the torch.

While several names are being discussed by fans, one name has divided the fandom a bit. Lena Headey, of 300 and Game of Thrones fame, has been a choice that some fans think will work out, while others believe is not something that is going to work out at all for the show.

Lena Headey’s descent into madness at Game of Thrones would be totally something that would be brilliant for the character of Bellatrix Lestrange. However, other actresses would be a great fit for the role. Thandiwe Newton, Emilia Clarke, and Anna Popplewell are all potential actresses who could take up the role and sell the character well.

Game of Thrones and Harry Potter can be streamed on HBO Max.
