The Harry Potter reboot is stirring the cauldron again, and this time, it’s not just about a Black actor portraying Snape. Reports now suggest another major character is being racebent, without any clear narrative reason. While diversity in casting is often a welcome move, fans are questioning if this latest change is about meaningful inclusion or just headline-chasing.
Unlike Snape, whose darker reimagining offered a bold thematic twist, this new switch feels less rooted in story and more like forced reinvention.
After the Snape backlash, fans now call out Parvati Patil’s ‘brown-washing’ casting misfire

The Harry Potter reboot just added fuel to its already controversial fire. First came backlash over a Black actor as Severus Snape. Now, fans are fuming again: this time over the casting of Parvati Patil. Italian actress Alessia Leoni has been chosen to play the Indian-origin character in HBO’s upcoming series, and the internet is not having it.
The issue is authenticity. Parvati isn’t just any student at Hogwarts; she’s rooted in South Asian heritage, with a name tied to a Hindu goddess. For many fans, especially in India, that identity matters. And casting someone who’s Italian, not Indian, feels like erasure masked as inclusion.
This follows the earlier backlash to Paapa Essiedu’s casting as Snape, a character whose narrative involves being bullied by James Potter. That storyline hits differently when Snape is Black and his bullies are White. It’s complex, and many feel the show isn’t ready to handle that nuance.
Fans are asking: where’s the consistency? The original films had cast South Asian actresses as the Patil twins. Why not stick with it? Instead, it feels like casting directors just found a brown-skinned girl and called it a day.
While diversity is crucial, so is context. Without it, representation risks becoming performative. For now, HBO’s Harry Potter reboot finds itself walking a very thin line between modern reinvention and careless missteps.
