How a 2018 Marvel Blockbuster Sparked Fortnite’s Collab Mayhem

Fortnite has always been the epitome of implementing numerous crossovers over the years. Think of any major IP in the current scene, be it Marvel, John Wick, or Uncharted. You name it, Epic eventually teamed up with each one of them and introduced skins and unique game modes related to it. You might think Epic must’ve planned this strategic path since the beginning of their journey. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case.

Epic’s previous chief creative officer, Donald Mustad, was initially resistant to this idea of collaboration, which means adding non-Fortnite characters in-game. The bosses were happy with their exponential growth in the gaming market. That’s when the Russo brothers kicked in and changed the whole scene by spending almost six hours on a phone call.

The 2018 Marvel Blockbuster changed Fortnite’s initial strategy

As mentioned, Fortnite was a massive success in the gaming industry, with millions of concurrent users and almost the same number of spectators on popular streaming websites. Epic was seeing exponential growth with its unique take on the battle royale mode. Everyone you knew was probably boarding the popularity bandwagon to experience it. As a result, the bosses at Epic had planned something different to improve players’ experience.

Meanwhile, the Russo brothers directed Avengers: Infinity War, causing a stir among Marvel fans back in 2018. Coming from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, that masterpiece is surely the biggest superhero movie in recent times. Joe and Anthony Russo initially came up with the idea of putting Marvel characters in Fortnite to promote their blockbuster movie.

Usually, no one can resist the idea of collaborating with one of the biggest IPs in the movie industry, right? Surprisingly, all the Epic bosses, including Donald Mustard, were not very fond of this implementation and blandly denied the idea. However, the Russo brothers were determined enough to pull this move.

Later, Joe and Anthony came together and convinced Donald to introduce Epic’s first-ever non-Fortnite character in the game. The Russo brothers pitched the idea of Thanos and how it changed things in the Marvel Universe. This process was supposed to be done within a half-hour call. Still, it took place for almost six hours, according to a recent interview of Pete Wanat, AGBO’s president of interactive technology, with The Game Business. And as they say, the rest is history.

How did Thanos change the roadmap for Fortnite?

Yes, you’ve heard it right. That six-hour phone call almost changed the trajectory of Fortnite and the way we see it today, thanks to the Russo brothers. That crucial long-lasting phone call basically changed Donald’s mind, and he agreed to give this idea a shot. And that’s how Thanos stepped into the battle royale arena, and Epic gave us one of the “epic” LTM modes, dubbed Marvel’s Infinity Gauntlet.

In that mode, you must find the Infinity Gauntlet, which changes you into the Mad Titan, and use its unique abilities to shred other players to wipe out the server. Followed by this implementation, other iconic things from different IPs, such as Iron Man’s repulsors, Captain America’s shield, and Kamehameha, were released in different seasons.

Fans didn’t stop appreciating Epic only for the Infinity Gauntlet LTM. They kept on appreciating Epic for the introduction of Endgame LTM after the release of Avengers: Endgame in 2019.

The collaboration with Infinity War was definitely the icebreaker for Fortnite, considering the movie tie-ins in the first place. Seven years later, it has collaborated with every major movie and video game IP, singers, footballers, and many more, making it a global phenomenon.
