Horses Unlimited Closes After 30 Years of Providing Therapeutic Riding Services in Mohawk

Horses Unlimited in Mohawk has officially closed, marking the end of an impactful 30-year journey under the leadership of co-founder Lauren Sternberg. This nonprofit organization provided therapeutic horseback riding services to individuals with special needs and survivors of abuse across Plumas and Sierra counties.

Founded in the early 1990s, Horses Unlimited received its nonprofit status in 1993, launching its first classes in 1994 at a small ranch in Cromberg with 15 students. Sternberg, a lifelong rider, was inspired by her early experiences with horses and her work with disabled adults while guiding at Graeagle Stables. Her background as a sign language interpreter and special education aide further equipped her to create a supportive environment for her students.

The organization specialized in equine-assisted learning, which focuses on the benefits of interacting with horses without the need for licensed therapists. Over the years, Horses Unlimited catered to a diverse range of disabilities and challenges, with each student’s curriculum tailored to their individual needs. Activities included engaging lessons like riding to find letters in the arena and opportunities to showcase skills in shows.

Despite the joys of the program, operating Horses Unlimited was fraught with challenges, including funding and logistics. The organization relied on lesson fees and fundraising events to support its initiatives. Sternberg noted the importance of community involvement, emphasizing that many volunteers contributed their time and skills, thus enriching the experience for both students and themselves.

As the organization began to slow down in recent years due to the passing of founders and operational difficulties, the decision was made to wind down the nonprofit. The horses will return to their families, and the organization plans to transfer its assets to a new nonprofit. While there are currently no similar programs in the area, Sternberg believes that the right individual could successfully establish a comparable initiative in the region.

Looking forward to her retirement, Sternberg is eager to spend time with her husband, work with her own horses, and explore the beauty of Plumas County. Reflecting on her time with Horses Unlimited, she expressed gratitude for the honor and pleasure of serving her community through this meaningful work.
