Hideo Kojima’s Biggest Fear Is an Inevitable Monster We All Fall Victim To

How much time do we have in this world to do everything we’ve ever wanted to do? It’s no surprise that even an auteur like Hideo Kojima can’t find the answer to this question and fears its inevitability.

Time isn’t stopping for anyone, no matter how talented you are or how much money you have, and we’re all destined to fall prey to its relentless clutches. Conversations about life and death are often unsettling, yet they give a new perspective to this life of ours.

Since Kojima’s illness, his outlook towards life and video game development has changed, with his urge to create something more fierce than ever. However, his biggest fear is something we can all relate to.

Hideo Kojima’s biggest fear is the limitation set by time on his desire to create

Time is an unstoppable force; Hideo Kojima recognises that better than anyone. Ever since his health ordeal due to COVID back in 2020, Kojima has started focusing more on how much time he has left to create the things he wants.

Reflecting on his 10-year milestone being independent from Konami and running his own studio, Kojima stated in an interview with GQ that time is his biggest fear. Regardless of how well the past ten years have gone for him, he still loathes the idea of not having enough time to satisfy his drive for making things.

It was good, these 10 years. It was the most important time… What I am most afraid of is time. I am afraid of dying and having dementia. I am afraid of forgetting things when I get old. I am afraid that I won’t even realise what I am forgetting. I became independent when I was 52. I’m 61 now. Also, there was Covid.

Apart from the inevitability of time, he also fears the diseases and the eventual death that comes with old age. When asked about his state of mind, Hideo Kojima revealed that his outlook towards life has changed, and it’s become more melancholic.

I feel nervous. I feel rushed. I still have a lot of things I want to do – that I need to do. I thought I could do anything if I was independent, but the reality is that I can’t. I always think of other, more weird stuff to make. But if I do that, and it doesn’t sell, my studio will go bankrupt.

Hideo Kojima dropped the odd pearl in the interview, confirming that he wishes to do what he loves till his last breath and has no plans to stop anytime soon: “I want to die making something.”

With the release of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach in collaboration with PlayStation Studios, Hideo Kojima aims to shift his focus to OD, which he’s developing in collaboration with Xbox and Jordan Peele, the horror mastermind behind Nope and Get Out.

After OD, Kojima plans to come back to his Metal Gear roots with Physint, being developed with Sony and Columbia Pictures. The PlayStation exclusive title is set to be an action-espionage game that blends film and interactive gameplay seamlessly to create a true next-gen experience.

Kojima is also developing the A24’s live-action Death Stranding movie, directed by A Quiet Place: Day One’s Michael Sarnoski. He plans to direct a film himself, but there’s still a long way to go. Whatever Kojima creates, it will be grand in scale and triumphant in nature.

Hideo Kojima’s creativity and imagination know no bounds, and it’s great to know that we’ll be seeing more of it in the future. He sets the bar with every video game he develops, and his creations will stand the test of time for generations to come.
