Everything We Know About ‘The Pitt’ Season 2: Plot, Release Date & More

On April 11, the season 1 finale of The Pitt left fans on the edge of their seats. After all, watching the tensions rise and the crises come and go during their grueling 15-hour shift was not for the faint of heart.

But, while fans of the show might’ve been disappointed when the season came to an end, season 2 of the hit Max show is already underway.

Find out everything we know about The Pitt season 2 below!

Was The Pitt Renewed for Season 2?

Not long after the first season of The Pitt started airing in January, Max renewed the series for a second season on February 14, 2025, Variety reported.

“It’s been a thrill to watch audiences embrace The Pitt as an update to procedural storytelling with a cast who authentically embody the heroics of doctors and nurses on shift in a 2025 emergency room,” Sarah Aubrey, head of Max Original Programming, said in the announcement. “Our collaboration with John Wells, R. Scott Gemmill, Noah Wyle and Warner Bros. Television has been an incredibly rewarding experience, and we are excited to continue down this path with another season.”

What Will Season 2 Be About?

While the specific plot details of season 2 won’t likely be revealed until the episodes are out, Wyle revealed to Variety in an April interview that season 2 will have a time jump from the season 1 finale and take place roughly ten months after the events of Season 1. By then, his character, Dr. Robby, will “no longer” be able to “pretend to himself that he doesn’t need help.”

In Deadline’s Contenders TV event in April, executive producer R. Scott Gemmill also confirmed that season 2 will follow the same structure of one hour of a 15-hour shift per episode, and will take place over the Fourth of July weekend.

When Will Season 2 Start Filming?

Per TV Line, Season 2 began production in Los Angeles on June 5.

A couple of days earlier, on June 2, Patrick Ball (aka Langdon) on the show shared on Instagram that he started receiving scripts. “We are so freaking back,” wrote script coordinator Danny Hogan in the email.

When Will Season 2 Be Released?

Fans of the show will also be happy to hear that The Pitt season 2 is set to air in January 2026, a year after season 1. Per the reports, Max is planning on a yearly release every January.

Who Will Star in The Pitt Season 2?

While fans of the show can expect most of the cast of the show to return for season 2, Wyle has already talked about casting new faces in the second installment.

“We’re calling all pros,” Wyle said at the Deadline event. “We want people who are good with props and who are used to working in a company, with an ensemble. We want creativity. We want passion. We don’t want ego coming to play. We have tremendous people showing up excited.”

Deadline announced some of the new faces on June 12. Actor Charles Baker, who starred in Breaking Bad and The Blacklist, will be playing Troy, an unhoused man and a patient in the ED. Irene Choi from Insatiable will be a third-year medical student with macabre tendencies, Laëtitia Hollard, from Trauma and Or Monsters All, will be playing a recent nursing school graduate, and actor Lucas Iverson will be a fourth-year medical student.

Returning cast members will also likely include Wyle, Tracey Ifeachor, Patrick Ball, Katherine LaNasa, Supriya Ganesh, Fiona Dourif, Taylor Dearden, Isa Briones, Gerran Howell, and Shabana Azeez.

“I would think the majority of the characters will be back,” series creator R. Scott Gemmill told TheWrap. “There may be some who are not back because they’re working the night shift, and we might not see them til later … Kind of like we did with Abbott. Most of your favorite characters will definitely be back in some capacity.”

How Many Seasons Will The Pitt Have?

While the plan of The Pitt having multiple seasons coming out every January is exciting, there’s still no certainty how many seasons the show will actually go on for.

“In a perfect world, this show goes several seasons, so we don’t have to rush this process,” Wyle said to Variety about future plans. “It’s a really interesting road that he’s about to embark on.”

When asked if the show could go on for as long as his other medical drama, ER, which ran from 1994 to 2009, Wyle wasn’t entirely convinced.

“I don’t know whether we can go 15 [seasons],” he admitted. “What would that make me? 68? ‘Dr. Robby, you have to retire!’”
