The first official trailer of Dexter: Resurrection has sparked a wave of speculation. Fan theories are spiraling through communities. However, one that many focused on revolves around how the former blood spatter expert might finally abandon the moral framework that once defined him, Harry’s Code.
There’s also growing belief that, in his new spree, he could even take down someone very close to him: a legacy character returning in the series, Angel Batista. But what truly struck me was something deeper, even if Dexter lets go of that code, the trailer suggests he might still rise to his own kind of heroism.
Would Dexter abandon Harry’s code in Dexter: Resurrection?
Though Dexter followed Harry’s Code for most of his life, he occasionally deviated from it, whether it was bludgeoning a man out of grief after Rita’s death or killing Logan in New Blood. Ultimately, it was his breaking of the Code that led his son, Harrison, to shoot him.

Given that history, it’s likely he might continue down a similar path. And even end up becoming the very kind of unrestrained killer Harry Morgan always feared he could become.
The trailer hints at this possibility, especially now that Dexter seems to have found a group of like-minded serial killers to surround himself with. However, that doesn’t necessarily make him a villain.
On the contrary, it could mark the beginning of his most compelling transformation yet. It could follow him becoming a rogue anti-hero from a code-bound executioner, someone who no longer follows the old rules, but still hunts monsters worse than himself.
Dexter and Batista’s tense reunion raises alarming questions
One of the trailer’s most talked-about moments is the confrontation between Dexter and Angel Batista. And he is seen asking Dexter if he is the Bay Harbor Butcher, a truth he apparently learned from Angela Bishop. Dexter’s response? He flees the hospital, avoiding the confrontation.

However, fans of the original series know a haunting pattern: those who discover Dexter’s true identity rarely survive. From James Doakes to Maria LaGuerta to even his own sister Debra, the secret comes with blood. So naturally, fear over Batista’s fate is intensifying.
This would likely make sense, as Dexter has previously contemplated killing people who knew his secret. However, I don’t believe it’s that straightforward. Despite the risk, I think there’s a real possibility that Dexter won’t be the one to take him down.
Could Dexter save his friend Angel Batista in Dexter: Resurrection?
While many expect Dexter to kill Batista to keep his secret safe, I don’t think it’s that simple. Their relationship is far more meaningful than his with Doakes or LaGuerta. This emotional thread might set the stage for something different. Rather than silencing Batista, Dexter could turn his wrath toward a greater threat.

The trailer heavily features Peter Dinklage’s character, Prater, who leads a serial killer gathering. Whether it’s a twisted social club or a hunting ground, Dexter may see through the façade and use the opportunity not to bond, but to hunt.
And perhaps in protecting someone close to him, like Harrison or Batista, Dexter could reaffirm a new version of his old mission: kill those who deserve it, even if the code is no longer his guide.
So, What Happens to Angel Batista?
Despite the odds, I want to believe Batista’s fate is not sealed. While the franchise has a brutal track record, this time could be different. Batista might be the emotional anchor that keeps Dexter from plunging completely into darkness, or the reason Dexter returns to a sense of purpose.

That said, his survival is far from guaranteed. Even if Dexter doesn’t kill him, Batista could still fall victim to one of the new serial killers introduced in the series, perhaps even Prater himself.
And if that happens, it could push Dexter over the edge in a way we’ve never seen, setting him on a new, vengeful path with stakes that are both personal and heroic.
Even without Harry’s Code, he might become something new entirely. A hunter of killers, not because he has to, but because no one else can. And that, in its own twisted way, might be his greatest hero moment yet.
Dexter: Resurrection is set to premiere on July 11, 2025, on Paramount+ with Showtime in the USA.
