‘Dept Q’ Star Matthew Goode Regretted ‘The Godfather’ TV Series That Francis Ford Coppola Disowned

Matthew Goode has played a wide variety of roles before he played the tormented detective in Dept. Q. One of his recent roles was playing former Paramount head Robert Evans in the biographical drama series, The Offer. The show explored the making of one of the greatest movies in history, The Godfather. Goode recently shared that it was terrifying when he landed the role.

The Offer wasn’t widely accepted as a true biographical drama. Some people didn’t like what was portrayed in the series about the epic movie. Even Francis Ford Coppola shared that the series wasn’t an accurate depiction of the events that transpired during the film.

The making of The Godfather was its own famous story, which received a TV adaptation in the form of The Offer. The story was told from the perspective of Canadian producer Albert S. Ruddy, played by Miles Teller. One of the other main roles in the series was played by Matthew Goode, who portrayed then-Paramount head Robert “Bob” Evans.

The series offered a look into the tumultuous making of the epic film, which meant that it had to deal with many controversial storylines. During a recent interview with Deadline, Goode admitted that his show really angered a lot of people. He shared his reaction to it, “I was like, ‘Oh, come on. It’s just a show. It’s an adaptation, whatever it is.’”

However, he shared that taking on the role of Robert Evans was terrifying, mainly because he didn’t originally audition for that part. He shared that he was asked to read for another part in the film. However, he didn’t hear back from the makers. He received a call out of the blue, telling him that producer Dexter Fletcher wanted him for the role of Bob Evans. He shared:

I was like, ‘Oh, right. OK. Well it’s obviously going to be load of big stars, and blah, blah, blah and I’ll still watch it because it was really good scripts.’ And then I was playing golf on a golf course during the pandemic, for the first time in ages, and it was p*ssing down rain. And I got a call from all my agents just saying, ‘Dexter Fletcher has offered you Bob Evans.’

The Downton Abbey actor found it really weird when he was offered the part of Evans. He shared his reaction, “I said, ‘What? Why? That’s so weird.’” Goode went on to nail the role of the producer, who improved Paramount’s condition in the late ’60s and early ’70s.

Matthew Goode is proud of the show, even though Francis Ford Coppola disowned it

While Matthew Goode shared that it was terrifying to play Robert Evans, he shared that he was actually proud of the role. Goode shared, “I loved it. I was proud of myself for getting for the job. Again, not mucking it up and people liking it, which was great.” However, The Godfather director Francis Ford Coppola didn’t share the same feelings about the series.

He wasn’t involved with the project, and he didn’t believe that the portrayals in the film were accurate. He shared, “That’s the point of view of, I guess, the producer but it doesn’t really reflect what really happened, in my opinion” (via Variety). Goode also opened up about whether he would play the role in another season.

He shared that it was very unlikely, given that Robert Evans stepped down from Paramount in 1974 after The Godfather. He shared, “Paramount’s been going through a whole load of structural change, with people going out and going in, so I think that time [for another season] might have passed.” He added, “I don’t know if a series could take Bob being the center of it.”

The Offer is now available for streaming on Paramount+.
