Today is day one of The Betfred Derby Festival and guests appear in high spirits at the prestigious event.

In typical Ladies’ Day fashion, guests have donned their fanciest dresses as they pop bottles of bubbly to celebrate.

Many have matched their fascinators and hats to their colourful ensembles for the full wow effect.

And many groups of friends have been seen posing for selfies to document the day.

Every year, the Surrey-based Epsom Downs Racecourse welcomes over 155,000 racegoers over the two-day racing bonanza.

While the popular Ladies’ Day is taking place today, the world’s greatest Flat race, the Epsom Derby, is roaring back into action on Saturday.

This year the event has been hit by yellow weather warning with thunderstorms and hail predicted to smash the famous track for the biggest race of the year.

There is no official dress code in the Grandstand enclosure at The Betfred Derby Festival, but attendees are encouraged to dress to “feel your best.”

The website advises outfits can be anything “from bright and bold to subtle and sophisticated.”

They added: “This is racing’s most spectacular carnival, after all.”

However, some clothing items are banned.

The racecourse prohibits “inappropriate or offensive outfits” or sports clothes featuring “team colours” or “team kits.”

While the main areas of the racecourse are more relaxed, those with tickets for the Queen Elizabeth II Stand, will have to follow a formal dress code.

Guests should wear “either black or grey morning dress with a top hat, service dress or full national costume is obligatory on Derby Day.”

It adds: “You must wear formal day dress or a tailored trouser suit, with a hat or fascinator.”

The Epsom Derby is held at Epsom Downs Racecourse in Surrey on the first Saturday of June each year, and it dates back to 1780.

The iconic race is taking place on Saturday June 1 at  4.30pm BST and fans can watch the race live on ITV1 and Racing TV.

What is the dress code for Epsom Derby?

THE Epsom Derby takes place on the first Saturday of June each year and combines the best in fashion with thrilling horse racing.

The main Grandstand has no official dress code, but Epsom encourages racegoers to come “dressed to feel your best”.

They advised guests to channel everything from “bright and bold to subtle and sophisticated.”

However, The Queen Elizabeth II stand does have a dress code and requests formal day dresses or suits with a hat or fascinator.

I’m an Irish electrician – here’s my little-known tips to help reduce bills by hundreds & way to get FREE energy

WITH energy bills often being a top expense for Irish households, it may seem like there’s not much you can do to save money.

But one electrician has shared his top tips for lowering your energy bills by hundreds of euro each year that many might not be aware of.

And he shared all of his tips to reduce energy costs in the home[/caption]

Dan O’Shea is a 20-year-old electrician from Co Longford who has recently been named the 2025 Screwfix Trade Apprentice winner.

Raised in Newtowncashel, Dan gained his skills working alongside his father Enda in farming and carpentry, giving him an understanding of the trades from an early age.

His journey into becoming an electrician began after leaving his studies in agricultural science at UCD to pursue an apprenticeship.

Dan said: “My parents always told me to do well in school so I did and I studied hard and got into UCD for agricultural science.

“Within two weeks I dropped out. I was always surrounded by trades and working with my uncle and my dad so I decided to do an apprenticeship with FWhite electrical.”

Now the youngest winner of 2025’s Screwfix’s trade apprentice, this promising electrician has shared all of his tips to lower energy costs in the home.

One of Dan’s first recommendations is to replace all fluorescent and conventional light bulbs with LED lighting due to their energy efficiency and longer lifespan.

LED lights consume up to 80 per cent less electricity than traditional incandescent or fluorescent bulbs, and Dan says this can lead to major savings on household energy bills over time.

Dan said: “In many households there is old lighting, fluorescent tubes, fluorescent bulbs but nowadays we have LED lights.

“These are great – they have a longer shelf life, it’s usually better lighting, it can be controlled from your phone and they are far handier on electricity costs.”

Another tip Dan has is to switch off electrical appliances completely when they are not in use, as many devices continue to draw power and inflate energy costs.

Small habits, such as frequently turning lights on and off or repeatedly using appliances like toasters and kettles unnecessarily, can see a major increase in electricity consumption.

Everyday habits

And to help homeowners monitor their usage, Dan advises installing an ESB smart meter, which provides real-time data on energy consumption.

Smart meters allow users to see which appliances are the most energy-intensive and adjust their habits accordingly, making energy savings more achievable.

What’s more, he said that there may be grants available to assist homeowners with the installing them.

Dan said: “There are ESB smart meters and that allows you to track your energy usage.

“I’ve talked to a lot of people about them and it helps them to see what they’re spending their energy on – if you’re able to keep track of your energy usage and amend it over the long run that is how you will save money.”

Another tip Dan has is scheduling energy-heavy appliances, such as washing machines and dishwashers, to run during off-peak hours at night.

Running these appliances at night not only reduces energy costs but also eases demand on the national grid during peak daytime hours.

‘Save thousands on your electricity bills’

And beyond everyday energy-saving habits, Dan believes that investing in solar panels is the single most effective way for Irish homeowners to reduce their energy costs.

Solar panels work by converting sunlight into usable electricity, which can then power household appliances.

They can significantly decrease electricity bills by generating free, renewable energy and in some cases, surplus energy can be sold back to the grid.

And Dan said while it may take 3/4 years to start seeing your return on your investment, in the long run it could save you thousands.

He added: “The biggest one is solar panels – within four years they pay for themselves and it is pretty much free electricity from then on.

“It’s gone crazy across Ireland and the majority of new homes are being built with them or installing them.

“You get your money back within a couple of years and then you save thousands on your electricity bills going forward.”

Love Island’s Ben reveals Casa Amor game plan and admits he’s not scared to step on toes

Ben will get to know the Casa Amor girls if he gets to that stage[/caption]

And he spoke about the possibility of reaching the Casa Amor stage of the show, and how he’d act if he did.

Ben told The Sun and other press: “If I’ve got loyalty to a girl, I would do my absolute best to go and sleep outside on my own.

“But if we’re kind of 50/50, and there’s five new girls coming in, it’s going to be hard not to just, you know.

“Basically, I’ve got to go and say hello, we’ve got to get to know each other, so at least we’ll see when we’re there I guess.”

Ben also discussed his villa ‘game plan,’ adding: “I’m not going to be afraid to step on anyone’s toes.

“I think when you’re in there you’ve got to look out for yourself, and you’ve got to get what you want in there at the end of the day.

“Everyone’s in the same boat, so if it’s early days in there and there’s a girl I like and I have no loyalties to anyone, it’s fair game.”

And he’s open to getting down and dirty in the villa – and has even worked out a way to hide his bedroom antics.

About having sex in the villa, Ben said: “I can never say never, you know, you gotta take every day as it comes.

“Who knows if there’s a girl and I sharing a bed with and she’s sexy, who knows what it’s gonna cuddling every night, it could get carried away.”

The 6ft 2ins model from Gloucester teased: “The hideaway is there for the taking as well, so we’ll wait and see.

“I’ve already told my family that I will try and keep it as PG as possible, because I have my niece watching so I do need to make an effort to keep it PG.

“But then again, there’s nothing wrong with just putting a quick cover over, so I could just do that and people will think we’re just having a quick cuddle, and that that is all it was.”

“But when I’m not doing that, my hobbies are either going to the gym or playing football.”
