Fifa to introduce major change to offside decisions at Club World Cup to avoid repeat of Taiwo Awoniyi injury horror

CHELSEA and Manchester City players will avoid the risk of extra injuries from late-raised offside flags at the Club World Cup.

Fifa chiefs have now confirmed a new computer-led system will be used for the first time when the expanded 32-club tournament kicks off in Miami in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Fifa’s decision comes after Nottingham Forest ace Taiwo Awoniyi’s horror injury

And with the flag being raised if an attacker is just four INCHES offside, it will mean there SHOULD be no repeat of the offside guidelines that led to the horror injury sustained by Nottingham Forest’s Taiwo Awoniyi last month.

Nigerian Awoniyi was placed in an induced coma in hospital following urgent abdominal surgery after colliding with a post in the 2-2 draw with Leicester when assistant referee Sian Massey-Ellis kept the flag down against Anthony Elanga.

Massey-Ellis was following International FA Board protocols brought in since the introduction of VAR on “tight” offsides, designed to prevent legitimate goalscoring chances being wiped out by premature whistles.

But the Fifa version of the semi-automated offside technology, being introduced at this summer’s 32-team tournament in the USA, will see the latest version of tracking cameras utilised.

That will see assistants automatically informed if an attacking player breaking the line and touching the ball is more than 10cm offside, allowing the flag to be raised earlier.

Each stadium will have 16 dedicated tracking cameras, linked to AI technology and algorithms, in addition to the sensor in the middle of the ball that was introduced at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Fifa ref’s chief Pierluigi Collina said: “The audio message, which will be “offside, offside”, will only go to the assistant referee when the player the algorithm has detected in an offside position touches the ball.

“Until they touch the ball, even if they are in an offside position, that message will not be sent.

“We are aware that the decision to keep the flag down was part of how VAR works, because you don’t want to raise the flag on a close situation and kill the chance of a goal.

“The assistants have been doing what we told them to do but it is clear that what is viewed as “close” has become bigger and bigger and bigger.

“At the same time, we want the assistants to be a bit braver and more courageous in these situations. If a player is 2m offside, that cannot be a tight decision.”

At this stage, PGMOL bosses have not planned to follow suit with the Fifa-style system next term, relying on the current guidelines once again.

But if the Club World Cup approach is deemed a success, the pressure for Prem bosses to order a change of tack will grow, especially if late flags bring any more injuries next season.

Fifa will also unveil the new Laws of the Game, including the “five second countdown” signal leading to a corner if a goalkeeper holds onto the ball for more than eight seconds.

Refs in the tournament will also be equipped with “Ref Cams”, attached to their ear pieces at eye level, giving TV and stadium viewers access to new angles of the play.

The only live shots will be at the toss before the game but referee’s views of key moments, including goals, will be shown on TV and stadium giant screens, and also available for officials to rule on VAR decision changes.

Love Island exes back ON after bitter split and trading public swipes

LOVE Island exes Ronnie Vint and Harriett Blackmore are back together – just a week after their bitter public split.

Last week The Sun revealed that the All Stars couple had gone their separate ways after deleting each other off their social media.

But the pair are hoping that it’s third time lucky and are giving their rocky on/off romance another go.

A source told The Sun: “Harriett and Ronnie are speaking again and getting back together.

“They’re so on and off – it’s like they row when they’re together but can’t live without each other.”

Their reps had no comment when approached by The Sun.

Their recent split came just days after the couple were hit with split fears by concerned fans.

Fans had spotted that footballer Ronnie, 28, had deleted photos of Harriett, 25, from Instagram – sparking fears they had separated.

But Ronnie took to his Instagram story to deny that they’re on the rocks at the time, and said posts about the break-up are fake.

The Love Island star shared a screengrab from an Instagram page that claimed he and Harriett had split.

The post appeared to show Ronnie commenting: “Yeah it’s true. Will explain my side of things later,” along with the caption: “Ronnie Vint is sharing his side of that story with what happened with Harriett.”

But Ronnie insisted that was simply a cruel hoax by a social media user.

He wrote: “This is clearly a set up. Edited because we are sweet and I haven’t commented a thing. Thank you.”

Just a day before, Ronnie and Harriett posted a since-deleted story around the same time, saying “LOOOOL”, with a black background.

One fan wrote on Reddit: “Harriet and Ronnie broke up??

“Ronnie posted this on his IG story and deleted the movie premiere photo with Harriett.”

Another added: “This is not the first time he has done cryptic stories and archive and unarchived posts with her.

“Why make it obvious on socials? Just fight in private.

“I highly think their relationship will end on very bad terms with how clear it gets that it’s so unhealthy.”

A third shared: “Both wiped each other from their IG. How people do that so quick is beyond me.”

However, the photos in question were then back and restored on Instagram.

Since that speculation online, Harriett posted Instagram snaps of the pair enjoying a sunny holiday in Dubai, and captioned them: “Dreamiest week”.

They’ve also been enjoying time together in Ibiza recently, but have unfollowed each other while away.

It comes as the villa duo’s plans to move in together were recently revealed.

Harriett opened up to The Mirror, saying: “In June. Everything’s happening at once.

“We’re moving up towards London, which is exciting.

“It’s really close to Matilda (Draper), so we’ll be spending a lot of time with her and going back and forth.”

Last summer, the pair originally split just weeks after leaving the villa.

However, viewers watched as Harriet and Ronnie rekindled their connection on Love Island: All Stars.

Although Ronnie was an original All Stars islander, his then-ex entered as a bombshell on Day 11.

Having reunited, the pair fell short of winning after being “dumped” on Day 34 of 36.

Madeleine McCann cops probe ‘gun found during Praia search’ after Brueckner had owned pistols

MADELEINE McCann cops were investigating two objects uncovered during their search described by local media as “guns”.

Portuguese daily newspaper Correio da Manha reported two firearms had been found in the area of scrubland above Praia da Luz, searched last week.

One of the handguns was dismissed as “irrelevant” to the McCann investigation and linked to another probe.

The other weapon, found in a well, was said to be more modern. Both were described as rusty and historic with cops expecting neither to hold Maddie links.

However, prime suspect Christian Brueckner, 48, is said to have carried a gun during his time in the Algarve.

A Sun investigation revealed he previously owned two antique pistols.

A Portuguese investigator, speaking on condition of anonymity, said of the gun reports: “The objects found are very old and very rusty.

“I’d describe them almost as archeological artefacts.”

Another well-placed insider added: “One has already been ruled out as having any connection to the Maddie inquiry.

“A separate investigation is underway to try to establish how it ended up where it did and what exactly it is.”

Reports claimed all the objects and samples taken from the search were set to be tested in Portuguese capital Lisbon.

Sources in Germany said anything of value would be retained by German investigation leads.

Luis Neves, the National Director of the Policia Judiciaria police force insisted last Friday the searches had “not been in vain” despite the apparent lack of results.
