POUNDLAND is set to close one of its shopping centre stores in hours as 200 branches face the risk of shutting for good.

The value supermarket is set to shut up shop in Southampton city centre as shoppers scramble to find the next nearest location.

Poundland in West Quay Retail Park will shut its store for good tomorrow but the store on Above Bar Street will operate as normal.

It comes as up to 200 other branches face closure, risking thousands of jobs.

A spokesperson for Poundland told the Daily Echo that the brand “constantly” reviews its stores as “leases expire or come up for renewal”.

They said: “In Southampton we’re consolidating our presence in the city at our Above Bar Street store that’s only half a mile away.

“We’d obviously like to thank customers for their support at West Quay and look forward to welcoming them to Above Bar Street.”

On Saturday afternoon, a customer reported seeing empty shelves on his visit to Poundland.

He also recounted how he had overhead an employee saying they would need to travel to another store.

Once the West Quay site closes, seven Poundland stores will remain across Southampton, Eastleigh and Totton.

In March, residents were asked if the bargain store would be missed with one saying the closure was “another good” brand “that’s gone down” in the city centre.

They feared there would only “be hairdressers left” if stores kept on shutting their doors in the area.

Another said Poundland would be sorely missed by a lot of locals if it were to also close its Above Bar Street store.

“I know for a fact that there’s a lot of elderly people who go in there for a deal, my parents included,” they said.

“I think it’s one of those shops you always think of as a good budget choice and I think the bargains you can get there would be missed by others and by me.”

The news comes as the bargain chain will also be closing branches in Bristol and Flint this month.

The shop in Union Gate, Bristol, will merge with two others nearby in Horsefair and the Broadmead Shopping Centre.

Eight stores have closed since the start of May including in Liverpool and Ipswich, while 12 in total have shut since March last year.

Five more are earmarked for closure from June 11.

It was also announced that three branches will close across Filton, London and Cowes last month.

And the Chiswick High road store closed for good on Wednesday, May 28.

What is happening with Poundland?

The owner of Poundland, Pepco, is reportedly eyeing up a sale of its UK retail arm for £1, with up to 200 shops potentially closing as part of the process.

Bidding for the business started last month, with Gordon Brothers, the ex-owner of Laura Ashley, and Homebase owner Hilco reported to be in a two way race.

A decision on who the preferred bidder is could be announced in the coming days.

Pepco said it expects the sale of Poundland in the UK to complete by September.

In April, it was reported advisory firm Teneo was drafted in to oversee the sale of the UK business.

It comes after Pepco said it was looking at “all strategic options” to separate Poundland from its brand.

Pepco previously warned that upcoming hikes to employer National Insurance Contributions (NICs) and national minimum wage would significantly add to its costs.

Late last year, it was revealed that profits at Poundland also tumbled by £641million in the year to September, with bosses again blaming slow sales amid a poor outlook thanks to measures set out by Reeves.

A spokesperson also said the huge loss was “due to a non-cash impairment at Poundland that relates to the acquisition of the UK chain in 2016”.

RETAIL PAIN IN 2025

The British Retail Consortium has predicted that the Treasury's hike to employer NICs will cost the retail sector £2.3billion.

Research by the British Chambers of Commerce shows that more than half of companies plan to raise prices by early April.

The Centre for Retail Research (CRR) has also warned that around 17,350 retail sites are expected to shut down this year.

It comes on the back of a tough 2024 when 13,000 shops closed their doors for good, already a 28% increase on the previous year.

Professor Joshua Bamfield, director of the CRR said: “The results for 2024 show that although the outcomes for store closures overall were not as poor as in either 2020 or 2022, they are still disconcerting, with worse set to come in 2025.”

Professor Bamfield has also warned of a bleak outlook for 2025, predicting that as many as 202,000 jobs could be lost in the sector.

“By increasing both the costs of running stores and the costs on each consumer’s household it is highly likely that we will see retail job losses eclipse the height of the pandemic in 2020.”

Iconic 80s movie star looks unrecognizable as he steps out in LA 40 years after smash hit movie – do you recognise him?

ICONIC 80s movie star Jeff Cohen looked totally unrecognizable this week as he stepped out in Los Angeles.

Best known for playing Chunk, the beloved truffle-shuffler from the 1985 Spielberg-produced hit, The Goonies, Cohen looked world’s away from his onscreen persona.

Now 50, the one-time child star currently works as a successful entertainment lawyer.

Dressed in a suit jacket, jeans, and a maroon fedora, Jeff was a far cry from the ice cream-obsessed, Hawaii-shirt-wearing-mischief-maker he played as a kid.

Before leaving acting behind, Cohen appeared in hit TV shows like Family Ties, The Facts of Life, and Webster, but he says it was puberty that ended his Hollywood dream.

“There were basically about four fat kids in town, so every time there was a fat kid role, you saw the same people at the audition,” Jeff once shared.

“It was survival of the fattest. But when I hit puberty, it was a career ender for me. I was transforming from Chunk to hunk and I couldn’t get roles any more.”

He added: “It was terrible. My first love was acting, but puberty had other ideas. It was a forced retirement. I didn’t give up acting. Acting gave me up.”

Cohen, who studied at UC Berkeley and later went to UCLA School of Law, co-founded Cohen Gardner LLP in 2002.

Despite his fame as a child, he says clients have no problem taking him seriously.

“My clients get a kick out of the fact their lawyer is Chunk. They dig it,” he said. “With my job, I’m dealing with legitimately famous people, so it’s just silly and fun.

“I’m usually only the fifth most famous person in the room at any one time.”

Cohen’s memories of making The Goonies remain vivid.

“It was great,” he recalled. “For me, the best part about it was Richard Donner the director. He was big on letting the kids be kids and I think that’s one of the reasons the movie stands up today.”

He continued: “People still watch the movie themselves or watch it with their own kids. Even though it’s very eighties in the fashions, it’s still kids being kids.

“Richard Donner wanted us to improvise, talk over each other, push and shove and kind of do our thing.

“I think that’s one of the reasons people like it. It doesn’t seem like kids acting. It’s just kids being themselves, which Richard really encouraged. He wanted us to be comfortable.”

Recalling one particular moment with Donner, Jeff said: “In the scene where Sloth picks me up while I’m strapped to a chair, I was told he wasn’t going to pick me up because John Matuszak’s back hurt.

“But of course, John was so strong it was nothing to him, so he just picked me up and kissed me. My shock and horror was real. I wasn’t that good an actor – that was actual terror on my face.”

Earlier this year, Jeff reunited with his co-stars to celebrate fellow Goonie Ke Huy Quan, who played Data, as he was honored at the TCL Chinese Theater.

Cohen, along with Corey Feldman, Josh Brolin, Kerri Green, and screenwriter Chris Columbus turned out to support Quan, who won an Oscar last year for Everything Everywhere All at Once.

Jeff, now Ke Huy Quan’s entertainment lawyer, gave his friend a proud bear hug as the group relived their childhood memories on the red carpet.

‘Awful shock’ – Irish farmer reeling as 10 cattle killed in freak lightning strike tragedy amid ‘changing weather’ alert

Lightning striking the ground during a thunderstorm.

AN IRISH farmer has been left reeling by the loss of his 10 cattle, who were killed in a lightning strike on a farm earlier this week.

The cattlestrophic tragedy happened in the Butlersbridge area of Co Cavan.

The 10 continental suckler-bred heifers, owned by a farmer from the area, are understood to have taken shelter under a tree in the middle of the field amid heavy rain over the weekend.

But in a freak accident, a bolt of lightning then struck the earth killing the cattle instantly.

The horror strike happened at around 8pm on Friday evening, shortly after a Status Yellow thunderstorm warning issued for the county had expired.

Cavan-Monaghan TD Brendan Smith has offered his condolences to the local farmer.

He said: “It just shows how dangerous storms can be and changing weather patterns.

“I want to say to the farmer I appreciate the huge loss it is to him and it’s a huge shock to hit any farmer.

“We all know farmers go out and tend to their cattle and their livestock and to their land in such a dedicated and diligent manner.

“So it is a huge loss to any individual and I am very sorry to hear of that particular and major loss on a farm in so many ways.”

Mr Smith, who lives in the area, admitted the local farmer had been left reeling by the “frightening incident”.

He said: “It had to be an awful shock to discover that number of livestock dead.

“I know that the loss of livestock through disease or more so in such a rare incident [like this] takes a serious emotional toll on any farmer and family apart from the financial loss.

“Farmers work very hard in rearing and tending to their livestock in a very diligent and caring manner.

LATEST TRAGEDY

“We should always be conscious that farmers in breeding and rearing cattle just do not shut on and off production.

“My thoughts are very much with the farmer in this huge loss to his farm holding.”

Met Eireann had issued a number of weather warnings over the weekend as a surge of humid air settled over the country.

It is the latest tragedy to rock Irish farms after a number of cattle were killed in a lightning strike near Gort, Co Galway, in August last year.

In 2019, eight in-calf heifers were killed on a farm in Moneygall, Co Offaly after being struck by lightning while taking shelter under a bush.

Some 23 cattle, mostly Charolais crosses, were killed in a lightning strike in Co Waterford in 2014.
