Popular Freeview box receives upgrade that fixes bug wreaking havoc on Netflix, recordings and more – check yours now

A POPULAR Freeview box has received a key upgrade which looks set to fix a bug affecting a slew of features.

Manhattan released the software update for its T4-R and T4 Freeview boxes.

The latest version – 2.06 – will finally fix a long-standing standby mode issue that has affected a number of users.

The update, which began rolling out this week, addresses numerous stability issues while fixing compatibility problems with popular streaming apps and improving recording reliability on the T4-R.

If you’ve been using Energy Saver mode as a workaround to avoid the standby problems, you can now safely switch back to Sleep or Smart standby modes without fear of your box becoming unresponsive.

The upgrade comes after households were warned of widespread Freeview disruption this week that could make their TVs stop working properly.

Viewers may switch on their telly to find a black, pixelated or flickering screen as a result of planned engineering works.

Some 87 areas are expected to be affected, according to Freeview.

Freeview has urged households that the disruption is only temporary and to not retune their TV.

“If you are affected by engineering work, please don’t try and retune your TV – reception will be restored as soon as the engineering work is completed,” the company said.

“Occasionally, routine engineering work is required on transmitters in order to improve terrestrial TV services.

“While every effort is made to minimise the impact on viewers, this can cause temporary disruption to reception.”

If you don’t want to miss your favourite TV shows while the work is taking place, Freeview has suggested households check out its online TV guide.

The Freeview Channel Checker tells viewers what changes are taking place that may affect their service and viewing.

To use it, simply enter your postcode to see what will be affected.

If you have a hybrid or smart TV, you can watch uninterrupted TV during the engineering works via the Freeview app or website.

While Freeview typically requires an aerial, you can access many Freeview channels and on-demand content through streaming apps like BBC iPlayer, ITVX, and All 4.

If you’re not sure what transmitter you’re predicted to get your signal from, put your postcode into Freeview’s Detailed Transmitter Information tool to check.

Major retail chain with 124 stores confirms popular branch to shut in weeks

A MAJOR DIY retailer has launched a huge closing down sale as it prepares to close one of its branches in weeks.

The Hobbycraft store in Imperial Park, Bristol, has confirmed that it will close its doors for good on June 21.

Every item in the store is now 50% off, with some items on offer for 70% less than their normal price.

Shoppers have taken to social media to voice their disappointment at the news.

One said: “Very sad that this great shop is closing.”

Another added: “No! First Home Sense now Hobbycraft.”

While a third person asked: “Any ideas what will go in the shop in its place?”

The Bristol store is one of at least nine Hobbycraft stores that have been earmarked for closure this year.

Owner Modella Capital is launching an overhaul after buying Hobbycraft in August last year.

Modella also agreed to purchase WHSmith’s high street business earlier this year.

In April Hobbycraft said that nine of its stores will stop trading by mid-July, which will affect between 72 and 126 jobs.

These shops include:

  • Bagshot, Surrey
  • Basildon, Essex
  • Borehamwood, Hertfordshire
  • Bristol, Imperial Retail Park
  • Canterbury, Kent
  • Cirencester, Gloucestershire
  • Dunstable, Bedfordshire
  • Epping Forest, Essex
  • Lakeside Shopping Centre, Essex

A number of other stores are still being reviewed.

The arts and crafts chain said the restructuring will also result in redundancies across its Bournemouth head office and distribution centre in Burton-on-Trent.

It has not yet confirmed how many jobs will be affected.

Hobbycraft said the shake-up is intended to help secure the future of at least 99 stores and 1,800 jobs in the business.

Hobbycraft chief executive officer Alex Wilson described the closures as a “last resort” and an “extremely difficult decision”.

He said: “For many our stores are more than just arts and crafts supplies – they have become places for gaining crafting ideas and inspiration.

“Very sadly, the strength of our offering has not made us immune from the challenges faced by the retail sector in recent years.

“Making these changes is sadly a necessary action to enable us to keep our doors open to crafters up and down the country.”

Which other shops are closing?

The Original Factory Shop is set to close nine shops this month as it prepares to shutter a total of ten branches in the coming weeks.

The chain previously warned it would have to shut some loss-making locations after it began to struggle in recent years.

The retailer is now set to close the following shops this month:

  • Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire – June 26
  • Perth – June 28
  • Chester-le-Street, County Durham – June 28
  • Arbroath, Angus – June 28
  • Kidwelly, Carmarthenshire – June 28
  • Pershore, Worcestershire – June 28
  • Normanton, West Yorkshire – June 28
  • Peterhead, Aberdeenshire – June 28
  • Shaftesbury, Dorset – June 28
  • It will also close a store in Staveley, Cumbria, on July 12.

Private equity firm Modella bought The Original Factory Shop back in February and has since launched a restructuring effort to renegotiate rents at 88 of its stores.

The Works is also set to close its Margate High Street store on June 8.

A spokesperson for The Works said: “As part of ongoing plans to optimise our store portfolio, we will be closing our Margate store.

“We have loved being part of the local community and apologise for any inconvenience caused by this closure.

“Customers can continue to shop with us at our nearby stores at Westwood Cross Shopping Centre and Ramsgate Garden Centre.”

The chain has already closed five other branches this year.

Iceland is also set to close a store in Margate in June.

Its store in College Square will shut its doors for the last time on June 21.

Iceland has not yet confirmed the reason for the closure but has said that staff will be offered jobs within the business.

Not only this, but Chloe Chandler, 25, a side hustler from the UK, claimed that people often make the same mistake when it comes to pricing their clothes on Vinted.

Posting on social media, the fashion fan who has cashed in £4,415.34 through the marketplace app, advised people to check their wardrobes for old Jane Norman and Morgan clothes, as she claimed these brands are just two of many that are “popular on Vinted at the moment”.

Sharing her top tips and tricks, the content creator and Vinted enthusiast who buys and sells on the app “every single day” explained: “I’ve got a Vinted tip for you – specifically for the people that are selling their old clothing, in particular clothing from the early 2000s.”

The blonde-haired beauty, who is a top Vinted seller with over 500 five star reviews, stressed the mistake many people make, as she added: “There are some brands at the moment that were popular back then that are so popular on Vinted now and I see people uploading clothing items from this sort of era and they aren’t priced high enough.

“They don’t know the value of the clothing. What I mean by this is people who have very clearly just started out on Vinted, they’ve got a couple of reviews and they’re just clearing out their old clothing – they don’t do their research about the products that they’re selling and it means that they are selling tops that are worth probably £20 plus, for £3.50.”

Not only this, but Chloe, who previously warned that Vinted sellers should never spray perfume on items, then listed the 18 brands that are currently flying on Vinted.

Not only is Jane Norman, Etam, Together, Wet Seal, Oasis and Morgan selling well, but she also acknowledged that old items from New Look, Lipsy, Per Una, Marks & Spencer, Miss Selfridge and River Island will sell quickly too.

Additionally, she recognised that items from brands including Vintage Dressing, Playboy, Krisp, Monsoon, E-Vie and Principles are also proving popular.

She voiced: “Some of them are doing really, really well.”

For those looking to get rid of their old clothes, Chloe advised: “If you manually search the item that you are selling and try and find something similar, you’ll be able to see what sort of price it goes for on Vinted.

“Don’t go by the suggested pricing that Vinted gives you when you try and enter the price when you are uploading your item.”

Instead, she recommended: “Save it as a draft and then manually search it because the suggested prices aren’t accurate.

“Specifically old New Look, Jane Norman, that sort of stuff is becoming really popular on Vinted now.

“So if you are clearing out your old wardrobe, make sure you are looking and just double checking what your items are worth, because I’m seeing not many people do research and it means you’re losing out on money.”

The TikTok clip, which was posted under the username @chloe_chandlerx, has clearly left many open-mouthed, as viewers eagerly raced to the comments to share their thoughts.

One person said: “I tried buying a Jane Norman top that was listed for £2 and someone bought it within half a minute.”

Why I hate Vinted, a real-life view

Fabulous Associate Editor Sarah Barns opens up on why she hates Vinted:

It’s the king of second-hand fashion but I hate Vinted.

There I said it. Yes, it stops items going into landfill. Yes, it helps create additional side-hustle income for many.

And yes, you can get things at bargain prices. But it is just not my (shopping) bag.

From personal experience, I’ve bought ‘cheap’ bundles of children’s clothes only for them to arrive dirty and misshapen.

Plus, with postage and buyer protection they didn’t feel like such a great deal. I much prefer going to my local charity shop or supermarket for kids’ stuff.

I’ve also bought more premium high-street items – a dress from Arket and a skirt from Cos – only to find they didn’t fit properly and the colours were faded.

I attempted a bout of selling stuff but gave up after my £110 Veja trainers got lost in the post and I spent two hours on the phone to Royal Mail.

A major gripe with it is that it still encourages you to spend, spend, spend. I’m not sure I needed the items I did purchase, I just didn’t want to miss out.

Also, the reselling of fast-fashion items – a £5 Shein top on Vinted for £17.50 – makes me feel a bit queasy.

Clothes shopping has become a daily hobby for a lot of people when really it should be something that’s done once or twice a year as a necessity.

But the 18 million Vinted app users clearly disagree with me.

To this, Chloe replied and confirmed: “Yep! They go sooooo fast at that price!”

Meanwhile, another added: “I have found so many of my camis from the 2000s but I’ve cut tags out and can’t remember where they’re from.”

In response, Chloe wrote back and suggested: “Just put the brand as ‘vintage’!! Then write in the description that you cut the tags out but they are from 2000s.”
