Brook Is Luffy’s Grandfather: Gunko-Brook Relationship Explained in This One Piece Theory

Among the many interesting dynamics introduced in the Elbaph arc of One Piece, the one that has caught everyone’s attention the most is the relationship between Gunko and Brook. After bringing Gunko to the central storyline, Eiichiro Oda instantly revealed a connection between her and the musician of the Straw Hat Pirates, which will be explored even more in the future.

However, what many One Piece fans don’t know is that there is a possibility that Oda might have also established a connection between Luffy and Gunko. According to a One Piece theory, Gunko might be Luffy’s mother, the most mysterious and hidden character in the entire storyline, and there are multiple aspects that prove this.

This also changes the dynamic between Luffy and Brook because if Gunko is Luffy’s mother and she is connected to Brook (most likely his daughter), Brook might be Luffy’s grandfather. This would change the whole setting of the Straw Hat Pirates in One Piece.

One Piece theory reveals Gunko to be Luffy’s mother

Since the very beginning of One Piece, Luffy’s mother has been a huge topic of discussion among fans, but she has never been exclusively mentioned within the story. This has added more fuel to the fans’ intrigue about her character, and a recent theory posted by Ohara on YouTube suggests that this mysterious character might be none other than Gunko.

According to the theory, One Piece chapter 1151 revealed that when Imu/Gunko released the massive wave of Haki, Luffy instantly perceived the Haki attack, and it looked like he recognized it. While he might not have had a connection with his father (Monkey D. Dragon), he could have subconsciously remembered his mother’s presence.

Another aspect of this theory was explained through Oda’s message about mothers in general. In One Piece SBS Volume 78, Oda was asked about why most of the mothers die in the story. The One Piece mangaka gave a weird response about how Mothers are the opposite of adventure. This was an uncanny answer, but now it comes full circle as Gunko (Imu) has become the biggest hurdle in his adventures as a pirate in One Piece. All of this hints that Luffy might be Gunko’s son.

Brook and Luffy’s relationship gets a new dynamic

The One Piece theory by Ohara not only explores Luffy’s connection with Gunko, but it also explains the connection between Gunko and Brook. According to the theory, Oda has been trying to establish the narrative that Brook was a Celestial Dragon or maybe a member of the God’s Knights in One Piece. This aspect of his life is hinted at throughout his individual development within the story.

What’s more, Eiichiro Oda has been trying to explore different angles to form a connection between Gunko and Brook. First, it was the music, then it was that unique flashback in One Piece chapter 1149 that Gunko had right before she was possessed by Imu. In the flashback, Gunko is seen with Brook, and in one of the panels, she screams the word “father.”

Thus, it is pretty obvious that Gunko might be Brook’s daughter. If this turns out to be true, and if the above-mentioned theory about Gunko being Luffy’s mother is also true, then by extension, Brook becomes Luffy’s grandfather. This might seem too far-fetched, but considering the twists and turns Oda has introduced in Elbaph, it might just make sense.
