Borrowing From Two Genre-Defining Sci-Fi Shooters Might Be the Best Thing Obsidian Did for the Outer Worlds 2

The Outer Worlds 2 is officially launching on October 29, and Obsidian Entertainment has recently turned the pre-release marketing campaign to eleven. From the exclusive details we got at the Xbox Games Showcase to the developer interviews at Summer Game Fest, we know a lot more about the game.

The sequel to the 2019 title is going to take what the original did but improve on it in every aspect. But that’s what we expect from sequels, is there anything new? There is indeed. The developers at Obsidian have confirmed that the combat and shooting mechanics of the upcoming game have been vastly improved.

The Outer Worlds 2 takes inspiration from these two classics

Director Brandon Adler confirmed during Summer Game Fest that The Outer Worlds 2 team “did a full breakdown on Destiny.” Speaking to GamesRadar, he praised the shooting and combat mechanics in Bungie’s title. Then, they went a step further by asking the Halo team for direct advice. With this much inspiration input, we should

According to Adler, the idea to improve the combat in the sequel was one of the first things that the team decided on. “Even before The Outer Worlds 1 shipped, that was one of the things that we knew we had wanted to improve when we were going to target a sequel,” he said.

The result is a combat system in The Outer Worlds 2 that feels dramatically more responsive, satisfying, and modern than its predecessor. Much of the first game’s charm was from how it built a world full of humorous characters with good dialogue. But when it came to actual shooting mechanics, it wasn’t the best we’d ever seen.

That’s not the case anymore. Obsidian has taken all the steps necessary and has put a serious investment into making the combat a highlight of the sequel. In addition to learning from the best, Obsidian has also added some movement mechanics that will make you feel like you’re playing Titanfall 2 or Apex Legends.

The release date isn’t that far, so we will soon experience these upgrades

Set to release on October 29, 2025, The Outer Worlds 2 will arrive on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC. One early problem we’re seeing with the game is the $80 price tag. The Outer Worlds 2 will be the first Xbox-published title to adopt this new price that Nintendo started.

This new price has already been questioned by fans, but Adler also has a response to these complaints. “We’re a game developer. We love to make games. We don’t set the prices for our games,” he says. One thing we can be thankful for is that the game will be available day one on Xbox Game Pass.

We live in an era where most sequels just do what the original does, but better. And it’s nice to see that The Outer Worlds 2 is trying to improve in other parts of the core gameplay by borrowing from the best. If you were on the fence about the sequel, this might be what seals the deal for you.
