‘Ballerina’ Director: “That ending was all Keanu’s idea”

Spoiler Alert !!!
‘Ballerina’ Ending Spoilers Ahead!

It hasn’t been long since From the World of John Wick: Ballerina, the fifth installment in the action-thriller franchise, hit the screens, and yet, it is already one of the most buzzing talks of the town. An R-rated masterpiece tamed by Len Wiseman and led by Ana de Armas, it is being widely loved and praised by both fans and critics alike.

One of the parts of the movie that is being more highlighted than the rest is inevitably the way the story concluded for this titular female assassin protagonist. This is because it pretty much ended the same way that the second John Wick movie did — an idea that seems to have stemmed from Keanu Reeves’ imagination, per Wiseman.

If you haven’t seen Ballerina yet and want to, this is your sign to turn back and leave – unless you wish to get the movie spoiled for yourself, of course. But if you’ve already witnessed the magnificence of the masterpiece, you know that the movie ended on a note that felt a bit too similar to how Keanu ReevesChapter 2 concluded.

For one, Ana de Armas’ Eve Macarro watched her close friend finally become a full-fledged ballet dancer after being kicked out by The Director, since she was a Ruska Roma assassin-in-training with her before. However, as she watched her friend’s performance at a local theatre, someone was seen putting out a contract hit on Eve.

Soon after, multiple phones of other hitmen present in the theatre start buzzing, making Eve aware that quietly leaving the venue through one of the fire exits would be better than sticking around and being in danger. This was something that was seen in Chapter 2 as well, following which Wick was forced to go on the run.

Fans must remember, Wick became a victim of this after pulling off a big no-no move, having executed a fellow assassin on the grounds of The Continental New York. This was followed by a bounty being reluctantly placed on Wick’s head by Winston Scott, the manager at the New York branch of The Continental and Wick’s ally.

In that action-thriller from 2017 as well, the phones of assassins in John Wick’s vicinity were seen buzzing to notify them of the reward they could gain for successfully taking him down as Wick was seen fleeing the scene. As it turns out, the scene of having Armas’ flick end on a similar note was none other than Reeves’ own idea.

Ballerina ending was Keanu Reeves’ idea, says Len Wiseman

During a recent interview with TechRadar, the Ballerina director came clean about the fact that his movie’s last scene mirrored that of Chapter 2 since it was suggested by Reeves. As he shared:

When Keanu and I were wrapping up [his on-screen involvement] in Ballerina, we talked about how this movie would end. And that ending was all Keanu’s idea. He wanted that last moment to be a riff on the second film’s final moment, which speaks to the ‘actions and consequences’ theme that runs through these movies.

Of course, Wick’s story continued beyond Chapter 2 following that open-ended nature of the ending, thus, there’s speculation about the possibility of Eve Macarro’s journey continuing in the onscreen world of John Wick. That said, Len Wiseman didn’t hesitate to share his perspective on where he thinks a follow-up for the same could go.

Commenting on the possibility of a potential sequel being next in line, the filmmaker said: “In a fantasy kind of way, yeah, I have my ideas. But, I’d like to hear what people respond to in this movie first. I hope there’s speculation from fans about who they think is coming after Eve, too, because we don’t actually know who that is.

That makes sense, of course, since spawning a sequel without even noting the audience’s reaction to the first film would be baseless. But considering the stunning 75% critical and 93% general audience score that the flick currently stands on Rotten Tomatoes, it feels like a sequel is more likely to come than not.

Ballerina is out in theatres now (USA).
