I went to Apple iPhone event today and I’m obsessed with 6 new tricks – ‘hold robot’ for phone calls is best of the lot

A FLURRY of new features are about to appear on the Apple gadgets you already own.
I sat for two hours as Apple doled out smartphone freebies on stage at its WWDC event in California – and there are six you’ll want to look out for. iPhone owners, buckle up.

NEW APPLE TRICK #1 – TEXT QUESTION PLEASE?
The Messages app is getting three upgrades – and they’re very handy.
Apple is finally adding the ability to create and send polls to pals.
You’ll be able to quiz them on a restaurant or holiday destination – or vote on who should win Strictly.
It’s a feature that WhatsApp added back in 2023, and is very popular.
Now you can do it in Messages too.
Another added bonus for Messages users is the option to add custom backgrounds to each of your chats.
They’ll sync with the contact too, so you both see the same wallpaper. Fun.
Third, you get the ability to screen messages from unknown senders.
“In Messages, users can now screen messages from unknown senders, giving them more control over who appears in their conversation list,” Apple explained.
“Messages from unknown senders will appear in a dedicated folder where users can then mark the number as known, ask for more information, or delete.
“These messages will remain silenced until a user accepts them.”
NEW APPLE TRICK #2 – GAME DAY
All the signs are there: Apple is getting very serious about gaming.
The company has shown early signs of wanting to boost its gaming offering with its increasingly powerful Mac chips.
And just a few years ago, Apple Arcade launched – serving up a subscription-only library of premium mobile games.
Now Apple has taken it one step further with a brand new and dedicated Games app.
This is a bit like the App Store but just for games (finally!), and also lets you locate Apple Arcade titles too.
There are ways to play with and challenge pals.
And it’s a good sign of things to come: your iPhone is immensely powerful, and has a lot of potential as a gaming device.

Watch out, Nintendo.
NEW APPLE TRICK #3 – ALL SMILES
Emoji are effectively the world’s shared language. Almost all of us use them – and we all know what they mean.
Last year, Apple created an AI feature called Genmoji to let you dream up your own custom emoji.
But that wasn’t enough for the fiendish emoji lovers out there.
So now Apple has added the ability for users to mash up two emoji together.
Think “smiling football” or “zebra cat”. The possibilities are endless.
NEW APPLE TRICK #4 – AIR WE GO!
By far and away my favourite trick of the lot is a new perk for holidaymakers – though it’s handy at home too.

There’s a new feature that translates foreign languages in real-time.
So you can have a conversation with someone who doesn’t speak English, and understand every word they say.
This is a game-changer for any of you that have been abroad in a country where you’re not fluent in the native tongue.
Live Translation should make it much easier to order in restaurants, find your way around when you’re lost, and potentially avoid being scammed too.
NEW APPLE TRICK #5 – HOLD ON A MINUTE
Another brainy new trick is Hold Assist.

This is effectively a robot that holds on a phone call so you don’t have to.
It’ll wait for a human to pick up, and then alert you when the conversation is ready.
That way, you don’t have to spend hours in call centre misery, listening to those awful tunes for a problem that might take just seconds to solve.
NEW APPLE TRICK #6 – HUNG UP!
Another clever spam-prevention feature is Call Screening.

This is similar to Apple’s Live Voicemail feature that lets you read a transcription of voicemails in real-time.
Now Apple will gather info from callers, and then share that detail with you.
So your iPhone can ask the caller for their name and why they’re calling – and then tell you the answer that they give.
Then you can decide if you want to pick up the call or totally ignore it.
CUT OFF!
Sadly, not everyone will be able to claim this bonanza of tech tricks.
Anyone with a very old iPhone will miss out on the whole lot.
The list of supported devices getting iOS 26 is as follows:

- iPhone 15 Pro Max
- iPhone 14
- iPhone 14 Plus
- iPhone 14 Pro
- iPhone 14 Pro Max

- iPhone 13 mini
- iPhone 13 Pro
- iPhone 13 Pro Max

- iPhone 12 Pro
- iPhone 12 Pro Max

So if you’ve got anything older than the devices on that list, you’re going without.
That includes the iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max, which received last year’s iOS 18 update – but has since been cut off from iOS 26.
EXPERT VIEW: 'ACTION-PACKED' APPLE EVENT

Here's the expert view from Paolo Pescatore, industry analyst at PP Foresight...
“Another action-packed event with Apple delivering a slew of new features for its platforms,” Paolo said.
“Overall, it looks like Apple has done enough in what promises to be a year of transition as it further builds out its AI capabilities.
“There was plenty of Apple Intelligence under the hood. New and subtle features that build upon its relentless focus on privacy and security such as screening of calls and text messages will be sought after and widely used by users.
“While it might seem, others are leading the AI race, it is not a sought-after feature among users and there’s no revenue uplift (for now). Considering the negative perception, Apple needs to tread carefully not to frustrate and disappoint its loyal base of (iPhone) users.
“With these latest updates providing a more coherent feel, Apple remains in an enviable position given its large installed base of users. The subtle addition of Apple Intelligence across key services will help grow awareness and provide users with confidence to drive further engagement. The tight integration between hardware, software and services really stands out with this latest move.
“A unified software experience is paramount as more users buy and use a slew of Apple devices. This ensures a more comfortable look and feel driving further stickiness among users. All of which underline the growing importance of software and services at a time when people are looking to keep devices for longer. More importantly owning more devices from Apple.
“The biggest visual change and redesign in years will coincide with a new iPhone later in the year. This will be significant as Apple is providing something new at a time when it is challenging to differentiate with a sea of sameness. Significantly it will put pressure on rivals as it makes their software a bit out of date.
“People will feel like they have something new for free with a software upgrade. Noticeably, this will be a very different software update and one they will remember unlike others.
“The name change is a very big deal which suggests a similar move might happen for the new iPhone to provide more consistency for users.
“Other new features like live translate while available on rival platforms are much needed and will resonate with its customer base.
“New gaming app follows in the footsteps of Apple TV in being a one-stop-shop for users gaming needs. This suggests a move to make bigger investments in gaming as others are doing. It represents a key battleground among providers. But the company is not resting on its laurels in TV with the new OS redesign to provide a more intuitive watching experience for users and families alike.
“It might not steal the headlines, but the iPad finally takes a huge leap forward bringing it into line with other product segments for multitasking.”

Fresh homeless fears as new Gov plan ‘incentivises landlords to evict tenants’ & Martin accused of ‘gaslighting renters’
HARD-pressed renters face the risk of homelessness under new Government plans, it has been warned.
Under the proposals, rents in newly built properties will no longer be capped at two per cent annually but will instead be tied to the rate of inflation.

The plans to restructure Rent Pressure Zones will go to Cabinet tomorrow but they have led to fears tenants will face significant hikes and have increased concerns that renters may end up on the streets.
Under the plans, rents in newly built properties will no longer be capped at two per cent annually but will instead be tied to the rate of inflation.
The proposal, which Housing Minister James Browne will bring to the Cabinet, will likely state that there will be no changes for existing renters if they stay in their current tenancy.
However if they move, a landlord can reset the rent for the new tenant at the market rate.
Taoiseach Micheal Martin said the proposals are well balanced and they would give greater protections to renters and provide certainty for investors.
But Sinn Fein Housing spokesman Eoin O’Broin accused the Fianna Fail leader of gaslighting renters and deliberately “misleading the public”.
He said: “When the Taoiseach said that this was a balanced package to protect renters and encourage investment, he is deliberately misleading the public.
“He is gaslighting renters, and I’m not even sure he fully understands the extent which they’re putting huge numbers of people, young people, people approaching pension age, at enormous risk with even greater financial hardship, and in many cases, at risk of homeless.”
Mike Allen, the Director of Advocacy at Focus Ireland, also told how the proposals could place further financial burden and threaten homelessness on renters when rental subsidies are not increasing.
Allen said: “They seem to be creating a system which creates incentives for landlords to evict tenants so they can bring in something at higher market rates.
“And secondly, they’re increasing rents right across the board. What are they doing for low income people on HAP to make sure subsidies there don’t force people into deeper debt and eventually into homelessness?”
The Irish Property Owners Association said they were concerned that the Government’s proposed reforms are over-complicated.
And they stressed that the proposed six-year minimum security of tenure will have a serious negative impact on private, non-institutional landlords, and on the rental market.
‘CHANGES ARE UNFAIR’
Chairperson Mary Conway said: “The proposed changes are unfair on the individual who – for good reason – wishes to, and needs to, rent out their home for a short period and points to a flaw on the part of the Government thinking which – by going after institutional landlords – has ignored the implications for individual, private landlords.
“We believe that in seeking to address political concerns about the role of institutional landlords (who are predominantly active in the Dublin region), the Government may be punishing individual landlords, particularly the types of landlords who are the drivers of rental supply in provincial towns and rural areas outside of the large cities.”

Nuno Mendes ‘cancelled out’ Lamine Yamal and won more trophies than Dembele – so why’s he not a Ballon d’Or contender?
HE is a Champions League, treble-winning superstar who by his own admission recently “cancelled out” one of the most talented players around in Lamine Yamal.
Yet Paris Saint-Germain’s Nuno Mendes does not appear to be in the conversation when it comes to Ballon d’Or nominations ahead of September’s crowning. Why?

The 22-year-old full-back lit up Portugal’s Nations League final triumph over Spain on Sunday night, earning a Man of the Match award.
He scored a beautiful equaliser to make it 1-1 in the first half – a low driven effort any striker, including his 40-year-old teammate Cristiano Ronaldo, would have been proud of.
He then stepped up to rifle in an impressive spot-kick in the shoot-out, having given 17-year-old winger Yamal – a Ballon d’Or favourite – a night to forget in Munich, a real schooling in the arts of defending and positional domination.
Mendes said post-match: “It was a clash [with Yamal] like many others I have had during the season.
“I have faced up to many great players, very technically skilled players who can make a difference, but today I cancelled out Lamine and [did] not let him do what he does best.
“This helped the team and I am happy I helped the team to win this trophy. It’s all about being consistent.
“I have played many good games and it’s about the work I do individually and with the coaches at PSG and Portugal.
“The Ballon d’Or? I play with Ousmane [Dembele] and he had a wonderful season, Lamine also had a wonderful season. But Ousmane will be in the Club World Cup and Lamine won’t, so I’m very happy for Ousmane.
CASINO SPECIAL – BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITS
“I wish him the best for the Ballon d’Or and I and his teammates will help him get there.
“I play my football; there are players who are closer to that prize. I don’t focus much on it.”

He can add modesty to his growing list of attributes, but why should Mendes be counting himself out of the most coveted individual award in football?
It is the peak of snobbery in the sport that the grandest of prizes – one that Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have dominated over the years – focuses on attackers and goal-getters.
It will likely carry on this year too. Barcelona’s Yamal, PSG’s Dembele and Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah are the favourites.
As Jamie Carragher once famously said: “No one wants to grow up and be a Gary Neville”, but is that changing?
Full-backs are now sexy, admired, idolised and coveted.
Surely the day is coming where someone in that position will win the Ballon d’Or for the very first time.

Trent Alexander-Arnold has rewritten the full-back rule book in recent years with his passing ability and goal involvements, and has openly admitted to be eyeing the Ballon d’Or now as he prepares to don the shirt of Real Madrid next season.
Arsenal’s Myles Lewis-Skelly has emerged as another young full-back prodigy after scoring on his England debut back in March, someone who originally came through the Hale End academy as a midfielder.
But Mendes appears to be on another planet right now.
Against Spain, he had more successful dribbles, touches, tackles, final-third passes and successful duels in the opposition box than any other Portugal player.
He tasted Champions League glory against Inter Milan on May 31, having already pocketed a Ligue 1 and cup double, and could yet lift more silverware at the Club World Cup in the States next month.
The Ballon d’Or is often about goals, with Erling Haaland, Vinicius Jr, Robert Lewandowski and Sadio Mane coming close to winning it in recent editions.
Yet it is also about big titles, and very few players can rival Mendes in that regard, but because he is a defender, the limelight will likely – and perhaps wrongly – be on others.
Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk is the last defender to feature in the Ballon d’Or top three back in 2019, and you have to go back to 2006 for a defender to win it outright – Italy’s Fabio Cannavaro after leading his nation to a World Cup win.
Time is on Mendes’ side to replicate that and Manchester City holding midfielder Rodri’s recent win will encourage him.
Play a starring role in Portugal winning the World Cup across the pond next summer and full-backs may finally get their moment in the sun.
