John Kiely praises his Limerick heroes after heartbreaking Munster final shootout loss to Cork

LIMERICK boss John Kiely expressed pride in his troops after they fell agonisingly short in their mission to become a Seven Domination Army by conquering Munster yet again.

Kiely’s side made history last year as the first team ever to claim the Mick Mackey Cup for six consecutive seasons.

But provincial supremacy is now Cork’s following a riveting final on Saturday night that was decided on penalties.

Barry Murphy, Tom Morrissey and Declan Hannon failed to convert their attempts in a shootout that concluded with Pat Ryan’s Rebels bagging their first Munster title since 2018.

Kiely lamented: “Penalties are penalties. There’s no dress-rehearsal for this. There’s no practising for this. It’s just put your best foot forward and you’re taking a shot on behalf of the group.

“It’s not on the lads. I thought Declan, Tom and Barry manfully put their hands up to take these penalties and as far as we’re concerned.

“It was our Limerick senior hurling team who lost rather than Barry, Declan or Tom – that’s for sure.”

For the first time in history, the outcome of a Championship final at Liam MacCarthy Cup level was settled by a penalty shootout.

The Limerick gaffer added: “I think everybody would agree it’s in normal play that a game should be finished. But listen, these are the rules, these are the procedures and we have to go with that.

“Fair play to Cork. They took the penalties when it came around.

“In fairness to Pat, Pat has done a fantastic job with that Cork team and to come down here and get a win is a serious achievement in a Munster final and we have to acknowledge that.”

Cork advanced to the All-Ireland semi-finals by becoming the first team to win a Munster decider in their opponents’ backyard since their 2006 crop did so against Tipperary.

For Limerick, a quarter-final on the weekend of June 21-22 is next.

Kiely said: “All told, I just have to be super proud of our lads. The effort they put in was just incredible. We’ve won six out of seven Munster finals. That record I think will stand a long time.

“We have a great record in extra-time. I thought we played exceptionally well. I thought we were a better team in extra-time.

“I think we created 14 scoring chances to their eight in extra-time, so I thought we had enough done to win the game in that extra-time period.

“That’s the end of the Munster Championship for us. I’m very, very happy with our performance levels right throughout the Munster Championship.

“We’ll reset, we’ll take a little breather now for the next few days and I’ve no doubt the men in that dressing room will regroup, dust themselves down and will really want to push forward now and be the very best that they can be in the remainder of this Championship.”

In the immediate aftermath of the game – which saw Cork’s Darragh Fitzgibbon force the penalty shootout by pointing a last-gasp ‘65 – Kiely felt it was ‘difficult to understand’ the amount of additional time played by referee James Owens.

The Wexford official stepped up from his role as line umpire in extra-time after Thomas Walsh went down with the cramp.

Kiely said: “We’ll have to go back and have a look at it and see exactly what were the major turning points. But there’s no doubt that Thomas Walsh getting injured had a big impact on the game.”

Cork boss Pat Ryan warns Munster glory is just the start as All-Ireland tilt takes priority

WHILE basking in the glory of guiding Cork to their 55th Munster SHC title, Pat Ryan already had one eye on the bigger picture.

Dislodging an outstanding Limerick team from the provincial summit was an achievement to savour but Ryan hopes the ultimate victory will be accomplished next month.

Cork manager Pat Ryan says Cork have now turned their attention to the All-Ireland title

Conor Lehane, Shane Kingston and Alan Connolly netted in the Gaelic Grounds penalty shootout that sent the Mick Mackey Cup to Leeside for the first time since 2018.

That it occurred just 20 days after Cork suffered a 16-point hammering against Limerick at the same venue made the triumph all the more remarkable.

For Ryan, the satisfaction came from seeing his players deliver a performance that was a much truer reflection of their capabilities.

But the Cork gaffer said: “This is just the start. This is just one thing. We move on to the All-Ireland series, the semi-finals.

“We know we’re a really good team. We saw what we were like when we weren’t at it three weeks ago. It’s all to play for.”

While the remaining two places in the last four of the Liam MacCarthy Cup race will be up for grabs over the next fortnight, Cork can rest assured that their ticket to a semi-final on July 5 has already been punched.

Having played six games in nine weeks – including National League and Munster final victories – the Rebels are now facing into a four-week lay-off.

Ryan said: “It’s probably going to take a bit of managing now. That’s something that we haven’t accounted for before.

“Limerick have plenty of experience of how they deal with that. That’s your four weeks off to manage properly and probably get a bit of advice from fellas that have done it before.”

The intermission should also give Cork a chance to ease their injury issues after Niall O’Leary (groin) and captain Rob Downey (hamstring) were restricted to roles off the bench against Limerick.

Declan Dalton (hamstring) played no part at all, while Ger Millerick also missed out due to fracturing his finger in the win over Waterford a fortnight ago.

Ryan declared: “I’d say everybody will be OK. We’ll be in a good position.

“Ger Millerick is three weeks in a brace, whatever length of time that is from the Waterford game, to try and get him back into it. But he should be OK.”

Cork suffered extra-time heartbreak in last year’s All-Ireland final. But Ryan felt his charges were better equipped to deal with the challenge this time.

He added: “We were definitely calmer. We had no injuries.

“The last day against Clare in the All-Ireland final, there were three or four fellas with cramps and injuries and you were saying, ‘Will we bring them off or will we stick with it?’

“That made life a bit easier.”

TJ Reid urges Kilkenny to ‘sharpen up’ after late Galway scare despite sealing Leinster six-in-a-row

TJ REID has called on the Cats to sharpen their claws for the All-Ireland semi-finals.

The Kilkenny legend fired 1-4 as they sealed their SIXTH Leinster title in a row against Galway at Croke Park.

TJ Reid of Kilkenny insists the Cats must improve in their hunt for the All-Ireland title

Goals from Mossy Keoghan at the end of each half proved vital against the Tribes, as Huw Lawlor starred at full-back.

Reid’s second half goal helped steer Derek Lyng’s men 13 points ahead coming down the stretch.

But a stunning Galway revival saw the Tribes get back within four, before Keoghan’s second strike sealed their SEVENTH All-Ireland semi-final on the bounce.

And iconic stalwart Reid, 37, insists they have huge work to do if they want to end their 10-year wait for Liam MacCarthy after letting Galway back into the game and firing 11 wides.

He told SunSport: “We have things to work on for sure. but look, we have a Leinster title, it’s what’s coming home.

“It’s time to reset, refocus and take one or two days off and sharpen up for the next four weeks.

“We hurled well, very happy with the outcome, we move on now to four weeks off which is a blessing.

“But look, we weren’t efficient – first half especially and there were probably four or five points there that we left behind.

“We weren’t efficient, we dropped five short there in the second half, we weren’t efficient there either, and it makes life a lot easier for the opposition to reset and go after us again.

“We hurled well in the second half but we weren’t happy with their goal that they got from the free.

“It’s something that we should look back on now and try to figure out what happened and try to rectify it.

“We were over 10 points up and they got it back to four, and it just put pressure on things and we shouldn’t allow that to happen.

“But we responded well, and Mossy got the goal at the end to finish the game.

“We targeted the Leinster final of course, it makes life a lot easier instead of going through the back door – and a Leinster final is one you want to win.”

Reid scored his fifth championship goal this summer to bag his 14th provincial medal.

Croke Park goals are always sweet – and his green flag ended a super team move when Keoghan fed him and Reid did the rest.

But he knows team performances are what matter most as they head into the last four along with newly-crowned Munster champions Cork.

TIME TO BLOSSOM

He said: “Croke Park is where you want to be blossoming and Mossie..we turned over a ball again, through hard work from Stevie Donnelly.

“I think it was John Donnelly; both of them combined and then Mossie broke onto it and I peed away from Daithí Burke.

“And again, look, it’s all about team play and team work. and Mossie saw me inside and popped it to me.

“Every team tries to be efficient and to pick the player in the best position. and if you see it, give it – don’t hesitate, if he’s ten yards in a better position you always try to feed him.

“I’m around a while so it could be 14 but look, it’s all about being present and winning the next one.”
