Lidl is selling £4.99 flower that will bloom even in drought as temps to hit 29C in UK today

LIDL is selling a £4.99 flower that will bloom even in a drought, as Britain is set to be blasted by 29 degree heat today.

Summer has well and truly arrived, and the UK is set to sizzle this weekend, with the hot weather showing no signs of abating.

And although the high temperatures will have many in good spirits, you may have noticed that your garden isn’t looking its best.

Hot weather can cause many flowers to droop and wither, even if you give them lots of water.

However, if you’re keen for your garden to still be in bloom in the heat, Lidl has the perfect purse-friendly solution.

The German discounter has launched a £4.99 French Lavender plant, which is set to arrive in stores on Thursday, June 19.

The budget bloom is perfect for attracting bees and butterflies to your garden, and is able to handle the extreme heat.

According to Hedge Express, lavender plants are able to develop deep root systems which allows them to access water from deeper soil levels.

This means that they are able to access water that other plants can’t, making them better able to withstand drought than other species.

Lavender plants are also able to store water in their stems and leaves, and their leaves are covered in fine hairs, that help to reduce moisture loss.

Plus, the purple flower is tolerant to dry soil and is able to absorb water even in sandy soil.

Other examples of flowers that bloom even during droughts are geraniums, daisies and coneflowers.

As well as being drought resistant, lavender can also help keep pests out of your garden.

Although lavender has one of humans’ most beloved fragrances, flies can’t stand the scent of it.

Therefore, if you plant the fragrant flower near the entrance to your home or on the windowsill, it will act as a barrier against flies.

How to Care for Lavender

To get the most out of your lavender, plant it in a sunny spot with well-drained soil.

8 must-have plants to brighten up your garden

Nick Hamilton owner of Barnsdale Gardens has shared his favourite plants and flowers you should consider adding to your garden, borders and pots.

Tricyrtis

A spectacular plant that gives a real exotic feel to any garden with its orchid-like, spotted flowers giving the impression that this plant should be tender but it is “as tough as old boots!”.

Penstemon

I love this plants genus of because most will flower all summer and autumn. They’ll grow in sun or semi-shade in a well drained soil and produce a non-stop display of tubular flowers in an array of colours and colour combination to suit all tastes.

Luzula sylvatica ‘Marginata’

With the evergreen leaves edged with yellow it’s great asset is that it
will grow in sun or shade in any type of soil and is great as groundcover in the hardest spot to fill – dry shade.

Eryngium x zabelii ‘Big Blue’

A stunning, nectar-rich plant that will feed the beneficial insects in your
garden. Leave the flowerheads once they have turned brown because they look stunning with winter frost and snow, extending the plant’s interest period.

Sarcococca hookeriana ‘Winter Gem’

If you need winter scent then look no further than this compact, evergreen shrub. The scent is stunning and the evergreen leaves create an excellent backdrop for the summer flowers.

Cornus sanguinea ‘Anny’s Winter Orange’

A dwarf version of ‘Midwinter Fire’ the very colourful stems create a stunning winter display, particularly on sunny days.

Rosa ‘Noisette Carnee’

A very well-behaved climbing rose that is perfect for training over an arch, pergola or gazebo. The small, “noisette” flowers are blush-pink and produce the most amazing clove scent constantly from June to November.

Sanguisorba hakusanensis ‘Lilac Squirrel’

I’ve never seen a squirrel with a drooping, shaggy lilac tail, but this variety will give your garden an unusual and different look throughout summer. It does need a moisture retentive soil but will grow in sun or semi-shade.

Once it’s settled in, it won’t need much watering – in fact, it prefers to stay on the dry side.

French lavender typically flowers from late spring into early autumn, with a peak bloom period between May and September.

Some varieties, like Lavandula stoechas “Papillon” and “Tiara”, are known for their continuous flowering from late spring to early autumn.

After French lavender flowers, you should trim the spent flower stalks to encourage more blooms and keep the plant compact.

You can also prune the plant back in late summer or early spring to rejuvenate it and prevent it from becoming woody.

I wanted to unzip my skin after getting a virus from a charity shop – I tried a silly TikTok hack… don’t make my mistake

A WOMAN has warned against trying out a silly “TikTok trend” after she ended up contracting a skin infection when trying it out in a charity shop.

Meg had uploaded a video which she had intended to be a before and after look at her spray tan, but it ended up being something very different.

She warned other shoppers to always wash the clothes they get from the charity shop to avoid finding themselves in a similar situation[/caption]

As she and her friend prepared to head to the tanning booth, Meg’s pal pointed out that a small rash that had started on the back of her neck a week before was “spawning” onto her face.

And because she had the beauty filter turned on for the video, she hadn’t noticed.

However the itchiness was hard to ignore, as Meg said she “literally want to unzip out of my skin”.

After deciding she wouldn’t have the tan, Meg instead opted to head to the local hospital, as she said that the speed at which the rash spread “scared” her.

Once she was at the urgent care centre, the doctor told her they were going to treat the rash in two ways – one with oral antibiotics, and one with a cream.

When she left, Meg was scratching her head trying to figure out where she could have contracted the virus.

She’d previously tried swapping her shampoo, skincare products and jewellery, as she thought they may have been responsible for the little bumps first appearing.

However, once she’d been to the hospital, she once again tried to figure out how she had ended up with the infection – and decided to look through her previous videos to see if it jogged her memory.

When she did so, she came across a clip of herself in the charity shop – where she tried out a TikTok hack which involves wrapping the waistband of jeans around the neck to see if they’d fit.

And when she suggested to the doctor that the hack could have potentially been responsible, he immediately agreed.

So Meg then returned to TikTok to warn others against trying out the trend.

“I just wanted to come on here and say I’m so sorry, I take full responsibility for like spreading that trend,” she sighed.

“Please don’t try that!”

She also urged people to always wash their charity shop clothes before putting them on.

“That was what caused it,” she concluded.

And the comments section was almost immediately filled with people stunned by Meg’s revelation.

Top charity shop tips for bagging a bargain

Ross Dutton has been a manager for Crisis's charity shops for four years and currently runs the charity's Finsbury Park shop in London.

Choose your area – As a rule of thumb, the posher the area, the better quality the clothes that are donated.

Don’t hang around – If you see something you like, buy it, as it’ll likely be gone when you come back

Look out for cut-off labels – Some of your favourite high street stores will have deals with local charity shops to donate stock that isn’t sold during their own sales. Often part of the deal is that they need to cut the labels off the clothes.

Stay at home – While some charities have their own site, like Oxfam and Crisis. many also sell from dedicated eBay stores, such as British Heart Foundation and Scope. You won’t get the range of bargains that you would get in a physical store, but if you’re looking for something specific it may be worth checking online too.

“Omg I’ve been doing that hack for YEARS,” one gasped.

“Stop…I do this all the time…!” another said.

“Got it – I will never be doing this again,” a third promised.

“I’ve done the jean trick for years – have never had this happen but nice to know it could be unsafe,” someone else wrote.

“Same – I think it was the hangers at this specific store!!” Meg replied.

While others shared their own similar “horror stories”, with one writing: “My ex got ink poisoning from his new jeans for wearing them before washing them.

“He was in the hospital because of it!”

“Thrifting horror story: when I was a child I had a veryyy small on my foot cut from a stubbed toe,” another added.

“We bought some light up Barbie shoes from a thrift store that my mum let me wear straight out of the store.

“I ended up getting very intense staph that had me hospitalised and almost lost my leg.”

“As someone who works in retail, the clothes stay out all day, thousands of people touch them everyday,” a third commented.

“We do not wash the clothes – we fold them, fix them up, that is it.

“WASH THE CLOTHES BEFORE U WEAR THEM.”

“This is why I wash everything used or new in stores before I wear it!” someone else sighed.

‘Obstacles that’ll always exist’ – Cristian Romero appears to blast Tottenham chiefs minutes after Thomas Frank hired

Postecoglou was brutally SACKED by Daniel Levy a little over two weeks after ending the club’s 17-year wait for silverware by winning the Europa League.

Several Spurs players were reportedly disappointed by the club’s decision to axe the Aussie, whom Romero paid a heartfelt tribute to less than an hour after Spurs confirmed Frank as their new manager.

Along with a picture of himself and his former manager, the Argentina international wrote on Instagram: ” Ange, thank you for these two incredible seasons.

“You’re a fantastic coach, but above all, a great person who deserves the best.

“From day one you paved the way despite the many obstacles that always existed and always will exist.

“Beyond everything, we won a trophy and went down in the history of this beautiful club, which is the only thing that matters.

“I wish you the best because you deserve the best, and thank you for everything.”

Frank joins Spurs following nearly TEN years with Brentford, whom he joined as an assistant manager in December 2016 before becoming head coach in October 2018.

Predecessor Postecoglou departed the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with his record of winning a trophy in his second season at each of his clubs intact.

In a snippet of his emotional farewell statement, he said: “When I reflect on my time as manager of Tottenham Hotspur, my overriding emotion is one of pride.

“The opportunity to lead one of England‘s historic football clubs and bring back the glory it deserves will live with me for a lifetime.

“Sharing that experience with all those who truly love this club and seeing the impact it had on them is something I will never forget.

“That night in Bilbao was the culmination of two years of hard work, dedication and unwavering belief in a dream.

“There were many challenges to overcome and plenty of noise that comes with trying to accomplish what many said was not possible.

“We have also laid the foundations that means this club should not have to wait 17 more years for their next success.

“I have enormous faith in this group of players and know there is much more potential and growth in them.”

UK’s biggest ever Euromillions draw making you richer than Adele could be won TONIGHT after huge rollover

ONE lucky Brit could bag the UK’s biggest ever Euromillions prize tonight.

The mammoth money pot rolled over to Friday after Tuesday’s EuroMillions draw had no winners.

The winner will surpass Adele’s net worth[/caption]

As the prize money is now capped at £208 million, a “Must Be Won” draw will be triggered after the fifth draw, which will be on Friday, June 20.

This means that the money will have to be given to someone that night.

Players can therefore win the huge sum of cash, without matching all five numbers and two lucky stars.

If no one matches the five numbers and two lucky stars, the fund will roll down to the next tier, meaning anyone who matches five numbers and one lucky star will share the £208 million sum.

If no one is a winner in this tier, then players who have matched just the five main numbers will share the prize.

The jackpot will keep moving down a tier, until there is a winner.

If there is a sole jackpot winner, they will become richer than Adele and Dua Lipa.

Andy Carter, senior winners’ adviser at Allwyn, said: “With 13 guaranteed new millionaires, and potentially the nation’s biggest ever National Lottery winner, it’s the perfect time to defy superstition and take a chance.

“The unluckiest day of the year might just become a day you’ll never forget.”

“This Friday EuroMillions gets even bigger.

“Not only will we see the £208 million EuroMillions jackpot up for grabs – which would make the biggest-ever National Lottery winner – but there will also be an incredible 13 guaranteed UK millionaires made through EuroMillions Millionaire Maker.

“That’s a not-so-unlucky Friday 13th for the lucky ticket-holders who end up bagging these life-changing prizes.

“Get your tickets early to ensure you’ll be in with a chance of a massive life-changing win.”

He added: “The EuroMillions jackpot is now capped, so any money that would have gone into increasing the jackpot now boosts prizes in the next winning prize tier, meaning that we could see multiple UK players banking huge prizes for matching just the five main numbers and one Lucky Star.”

What is the UK’s biggest lottery jackpot?

Back in 2022, an anonymous UK ticket holder won £195million on the EuroMillions, making the current record holder for the prize.

Everything you need to know about Lottery and EuroMillions

Just two months earlier, Joe and Jess Thwaite, from Gloucester, bagged £184,262,899 with a Lucky Dip ticket for the draw on May 10.

The UK’s third biggest win came after an anonymous ticket-holder scooped the £177million jackpot on November 26 last year.

It came after 11 millionaires were made on the National Lottery draw in just one week in 2024.

One lucky Brit won a cool £33million with their Euromillions ticket.

Another ticket, which was snagged in the UK, matched all five main numbers and two Lucky Stars.

It came just weeks after two players from the same county scooped £1m each.

Tom Fletcher forced to apologise for ‘insensitive’ post about his flight after devastating Air India crash

TOM Fletcher has apologised after posting an “insensitive” Instagram photo after the fatal Air India crash.

He deleted a post about flying a plane while listening to the Foo Fighters song Learn to Fly.

On Thursday it was revealed that an Air India plane burst into a fireball while carrying 242 people, including 53 Brits, flying to London Gatwick airport.

A British man miraculously survived the crash after jumping off the flaming jet and was filmed walking away from the wreckage.

After reading the reports, McFly singer Tom, 38, wrote: “Sorry, I’ve only just seen the terrible news about the Air India crash.

“So awful. Had I known earlier, I obviously wouldn’t have posted about my flight today.

The former Strictly Come Dancing star continued: “I understand why that must have looked insensitive and have deleted it. Thanks for letting me know.

“My whole heart goes out to everyone involved in the crash and all their friends & families.”

Tom got his license to fly in 2008 when he was just 23 years old.

He previously said he would have been a pilot if he wasn’t in McFly.

Tom apologised after Mark Wright was slammed for moaning about leg room on his flight after the tragic Air India crash.

The former Towie star, 38,  posted a snap of himself with wife Michelle Keegan and baby Palma posing in front of a private plane, as he moaned about the leg room on standard jets.

Appearing completely oblivious to the day’s events, Mark wrote alongside it:  “1 day babe, for now we’ll take row 26 with no extra leg room.”

His followers were quick to point out his lack of sensitivity, with one person commenting: “Prob not the best day to post this when so many people lost their lives on a plane.”

A second said: “Not really appropriate to put this up after today’s plane crash.”

While a third wrote: “Poor taste given today’s event.”

And a fourth added: “What a time to choose to post this.”

Radio DJ Mark has since deleted the post and blamed it on an admin error.

He wrote: “I apologise for a post I just put up on my page after today’s heartbreaking events.

“I have posts from a holiday that are on the scheduled setting, which go out on future days I have set them for which was done last week. It’s a horrendous coincidence that today’s post was on such a devastating day.

“Once I logged in to my Instagram and realised the post had gone out, I immediately deleted. My heart goes out to everyone who has been effected from today. I’m sorry for this mistake and any offence caused.”

At least 265 people were killed – including those on the plane and on the ground – when the Air India flight crashed into a hostel seconds after take off.

According to flight tracking website Flightradar, the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner’s final signal was received just seconds after take-off.

This was last logged at 1:38pm local time – less than a minute after it started the journey.

King Charles II said he was “desperately shocked” by Thursday’s air crash in India, sending “prayers and deepest possible sympathies” to the families of those affected.

“My wife and I have been desperately shocked by the terrible events in Ahmedabad this morning,” the monarch wrote on Instagram, calling it a “heartbreaking and traumatic time”.
