Moment van driver ploughs into off-licence before making off with £11K of cigarettes & booze as shop crumbles around him

A BRAZEN thief used a stolen van to smash through a shop wall and steal thousands of pounds worth of cigarettes and alcohol.

Shocking footage shows the moment Kayne Palmer, 33, rams into Bestwood Hill Food and Wine in Nottingham using a stolen vehicle in October 2023.

Stock and shelves fly across the room as the burglar reverses into the off license at speed.

Brickwork continues to crumble around the van as Palmer nabs £8,000 worth of fags and booze.

He can be seen on CCTV stuffing thousands of cigarettes into a bag before discovering it has a hole in the bottom.

In a panic, Palmer then grabs a shopping basket which he uses to carry the stolen goods.

He also swipes a till which he loads into the van before fleeing the scene.

Palmer caused thousands of pounds worth of damage to the shop and stole £7,897 of cigarettes and alcohol, as well as £3,239 of cash.

The frightened shop owners were upstairs at the time of the ram raid and were woken by the loud bang of the van smashing into the store.

They called the police but by the time they got downstairs the crook had gone.

Hours before the 5am raid, Palmer broke into a nearby house and stole keys to the work van along with a handbag and bank card.

He carried out a 24-hour crime spree less than a month later, successfully breaking into five houses and attempting to force his way into another.

He was finally caught when officers spotted him fence-hopping over gardens following an afternoon break-in in Bestwood, Nottingham.

Palmer admitted to a series of offences, including eight burglaries, multiple counts of dangerous driving, assault and driving while disqualified.

He was jailed for seven years at Nottingham Crown Court last Friday and was banned from driving for five-and-a-half years.

Detective Inspector Julian Eminson-Ferry, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “He is a clear danger to society.

“During his crime spree he stole a vehicle and drove dangerously, putting members of the public at risk.

“He crashed into street furniture, people’s property, and narrowly missed pedestrians, showing a blatant disregard for the safety of members of the public.

“Palmer also stole another vehicle and used this in a ram raid of a locally owned shop.

“Here he stole thousands of pounds worth of cash and products and destroyed the victim’s shop, ruining their business and livelihood.

“He didn’t hide his offending and openly showed his face during the burglaries he committed.

“This showed his desperation and flippancy about the offences he carried out, regardless of the detrimental impact on his victims.”

‘I’m angry’ – Ronan O’Gara slates ‘main culprit’ of La Rochelle’s ‘wasted season’ after play-off blow

RONAN O’Gara was unsparing in his criticism after La Rochelle missed out on a place in the Top 14 play-offs – particularly towards himself.

His side were leapfrogged for the last play-off place by Castres after they fell to a 32-18 away defeat to Pau.

The loss to eight-placed Pau ensured they dropped down to seventh[/caption]

It was an especially bitter pill to swallow since they had seemed to be out the other side of a dismal four-month win-less stretch from January-April.

Being overtaken by a solitary point in the standings would have rubbed further salt in the wound.

Reflecting on the club missing out on the French post-season for the first time since 2018, the Munster icon made no attempt to hide what a body blow it came as.

He admitted: “It’s the end of a cycle. We need new ideas, new players, new tactics, a complete overhaul, and much more consistency…

“How can we play like that in such an important match?

“There were some similarities with the team that had just won five in a row, but we were a bit like the team we saw in February, March, and April.

“When we had our backs against the wall, we won five games to give ourselves the chance to play a ‘round-of-16 match’ tonight.

“I feel like we just thought we’d turn up and do the job, but sport isn’t like that. Pau deserved to win…

“The coach was especially missing. We talk about discipline all week, but when the coach is suspended, he can’t have any impact.

“The main culprit is me. I’m frustrated, angry, disappointed. And I’m sad for the fans after all the bad games they have had.

“I’m sad for Brice (Dulin), I’m very sad for Tawera (Kerr-Barlow). He deserves much more than this.”

The suspension he alluded to was dished out was of the five-week variety.

The 48-year-old was last month slapped with it by French authorities for “actions against a match official” during a January loss to Toulon.

The severity of the ban seemingly led to a protest from O’Gara prior to his side’s 30-29 victory over Vannes on May 10.

Parlez-Vous French Rugby reported at the time that he refused to leave the team bus for the first 20 minutes of the match to make it clear he was unhappy with league chiefs.

While the veteran pair in retiring Brice Dulin and Stade Francais-bound Tawera Kerr-Barlow he mentioned are departing, there is some grounds for optimism based off their incoming player additions.

France scrum-half Nolann Le Garrec, 23, jumps out among four arrivals for the 2025/2026 season.

The others are Semi Lagivala, 22, Davit Niniashvili, 22, and Ugo Pacome, 20, are the others as it’s clear the well-financed outfit are embarking on a youth movement.

O’Gara is contracted with the south-western club until 2027 and has repeatedly said he intends to honour that contract rather than move on to pastures new.

Chelsea to be dumped out of Club World Cup in last 16 with shock champions beating City in final, predicts supercomputer

A SUPERCOMPUTER has predicted a surprise Club World Cup winner and Chelsea to crash out in the last-16.

The revamped 32-team tournament hosted in the United States gets underway on June 15.

Man City are set to reach the final[/caption]

A supercomputer conducted by BoyleSports, who offer the latest Club World Cup odds, has simulated matches 10,000 times to come to its results.

Chelsea are the heavy favourites to top their group featuring ES Tunis, Flamengo and Los Angeles FC.

But the number crunching machine reckons the Blues will finish second behind the Tunisian side.

That would see Enzo Maresca’s men face Benfica in the last-16, who are set to top a tough group of Bayern Munich, Boca Juniors and Auckland City.

And in a shock result, Chelsea will be beaten 3-1 by the Portuguese giants.

On the other side of the draw, Manchester City have also been predicted to come runner-up in their group of Juventus, Al-Ain and Wydad Casablanca.

Yet they will hit top form in the knockout stages, seeing off Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Juve to reach the final.

The supercomputer reckons they will face surprise package Benfica in the showpiece on July 13 in New Jersey.

And they will incredibly beat another Premier League club, this time defeating City 2-1 to take home the trophy.

PSG are set to have a hangover from Champions League glory and crash out to Palmeiras in a last-16 thriller.

The Brazilians and Argentine juggernauts River Plate will be the best from South America, both going as far as the quarter-final.

But Botafogo will give it a good go, coming out of their group instead of Atletico Madrid.

Mega-rich Saudi Arabians Al-Hilal will progress from their group of Real Madrid, RB Salzburg and Pachuca before losing in the last-16.

The bookies have Real, City, PSG and Bayern as the favourites.

Shoppers rush to pick up hair styling set scanning for £40 down from £260 at major discount retailer

SHOPPERS are rushing to pick up a hair styling set scanning for £40 down from £260 at a major discount retailer.

Eagle-eyed shoppers could not believe their luck when they spotted a Soleil styling tool marked down at Home Bargains.

Soleil Endless Styling Set (Black) on sale for £39.99.
Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK group
The pricey tool comes with curling tong, straightener and hot brush.[/caption]

Writing in the Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK group, they said: “Not sure if these have been posted before or if they’re any good but reviews online look good!

“£40 down from £260. Curling tong, straightener and hot brush.”

Others were quick to chime in and praise the find.

One shopper who tried the brand before said: “Honestly both are very good.

Straighteners are better than my admittedly very old GHD’s. Styling brush was also really good, prefer it to the round brush on my Dyson Air Wrap.”

While another said: “I’ve got this it’s really good.”

The set comes with a curling tong, straightener and hot brush.

If you bought a single straightener from the Soleil website you could expect to pay up to £385.

A hot brush sold on the official website also costs £342.

If you are keen to shop Home Bargains cut price deal you will need to head one of its physical branches.

That’s because the deal does not appear to be available at its online store.

If you do plan to shop in store it may be worth ringing up your nearest branch ahead of time to avoid disappointment.

You can find your nearest Home Bargains by heading online and searching storelocator.home.bargains.

HOW TO SAVE MONEY AT HOME BARGAINS

Knowing when to pick up products is just one way to save money at Home Bargains – there’s a host of other hacks you can use to slash costs.

First, you’ll want to shop around before buying any product, which means using price comparison sites such as www.pricespy.co.uk and www.latestdeals.co.uk.

The Google Shopping tab is another great way to see how a product compares price wise as well

Also if you are looking for dupes for pricey products, Home Bargains can be great.

The Sun also recently spoke to deals expert, Tom Church who said it is best to head to the store first thing in the morning to grab the best deals.

That is because most the larger Home Bargains stores get deliveries at around 7:30am everyday.

Tom said to make sure you take a good look around as you enter the store.

He explained: “Often, Home Bargains keeps the best deals at the front to lure you in. You don’t want to walk straight past them on the way in!.”

How to bag a bargain

SUN Savers Editor Lana Clements explains how to find a cut-price item and bag a bargain…

Sign up to loyalty schemes of the brands that you regularly shop with.

Big names regularly offer discounts or special lower prices for members, among other perks.

Sales are when you can pick up a real steal.

Retailers usually have periodic promotions that tie into payday at the end of the month or Bank Holiday weekends, so keep a lookout and shop when these deals are on.

Sign up to mailing lists and you’ll also be first to know of special offers. It can be worth following retailers on social media too.

When buying online, always do a search for money off codes or vouchers that you can use vouchercodes.co.uk and myvouchercodes.co.uk are just two sites that round up promotions by retailer.

Scanner apps are useful to have on your phone. Trolley.co.uk app has a scanner that you can use to compare prices on branded items when out shopping.

Bargain hunters can also use B&M’s scanner in the app to find discounts in-store before staff have marked them out.

And always check if you can get cashback before paying which in effect means you’ll get some of your money back or a discount on the item.

‘Time-warp’ 90s Ford Escort boasting its original radio & number plates sells for 5 TIMES its original price

An image collage containing 3 images, Image 1 shows Red 1993 Ford Escort RS Cosworth driving on a road, Image 2 shows Interior view of a red 1993 Ford Escort RS Cosworth, Image 3 shows Red 1993 Ford Escort RS Cosworth

A THIRTY-two-year-old Ford Escort has sold for a massive £105,750 – over five times its original price.

The red 1993 Ford Escort RS Cosworth only had one owner who had done just 12,530 miles in it.

Miraculously the original dealer number plates were still intact[/caption]

The car even came with its original radio – complete with tape cassette player[/caption]

It had a top speed of 137mph and could do 0-60mph in 6.2 seconds.

In 1993 it was worth £20,000 – equivalent to £43,000 now in today’s money.

Supplied new in November 1993 the Escort RS Cosworth ‘Big Turbo’ rolled off the production line finished in the rare colour combination of Radiant Red with a Polaris Grey Hexagon cloth interior.

It was described as in exceptional ‘time warp’ condition throughout, as reported by Luxury Auto News.

The original radio still showed the vehicle registration when switched on, the mandatory Vecta immobiliser was still in situ and functioning correctly and the original dealer number plates remained attached.

Ahead of the sale, the listing said: “Motorsport devotee John Phillips acquired the Escort as an early retirement present to himself and it was undoubtedly his ‘pride and joy’.

“It lived in its own garage from the day he bought it, never came out on wet days and was diligently maintained as and when required until his untimely passing in 2009 from which point the Escort remained interred in the same garage until recently removed.

“The history file is comprehensive and includes the original grey leather document wallet, the full complement of books and manuals.

“Its original tax disc holder, documentation relating to the ‘Options’ purchase scheme and the dealer handover sheet, plus of course various invoices, MoT Certificates and later tax discs.

“In readiness for sale, the cambelt and tensioner has been renewed and an oil and filter change carried out.

“However with minimal use over the last 15 or so years, we recommend that minor recommissioning may be required to ensure that everything is exactly as it should be.

“A rare and desirable homologation special in simply remarkable condition.”

It was sold for the eye-watering sum by Iconic Auctioneers in Northampton.
