Crystal Palace release TWENTY players including star man Ebere Eze’s brother as they anxiously await European fate

CRYSTAL PALACE have released 20 players following the 2024-25 season.

The Eagles enjoyed a successful campaign this term, winning the FA Cup and qualifying for Europa League football.

But they will now bid farewell to several players as they prepare for the upcoming season.

As previously announced, Joel Ward is leaving Selhurst Park after 13 years.

The 35-year-old made 364 appearances for Crystal Palace after joining from Portsmouth.

But a calf issue hampered his final year at the club, limiting him to just three outings.

Jeffrey Schlupp is also confirmed to be leaving after eight-and-a-half years.

The 32-year-old spent the second half of the season with Celtic in the Scottish Premiership.

Among the other players listed as free transfers, as per the official Premier League website, are; Cormac Austin, Chris Francis, Roshaun Mathurin, Louie Moulden, Kurainashe Musanhi, David Obou, Killian Phillips, Luke Plange, Jadan Raymond, Joe Sheridan and Jack Wells-Morrison.

Chimaechi Eze, the brother of star man Eberechi Eze, has also been listed as a free transfer.

The players released by Palace are; Freddie Cowin, William Eastwood, Joseph Khoshaba, Enruque Lameiras, Finley Marjoram and Caleb Redhead.

Despite qualifing for next season’s Europa League, the Eagles are currently at risk of being kicked out of the competition.

John Textor has a stake in both Crystal Palace and Lyon, who have also qualified.

Uefa rules on multi-club ownership prevent any two clubs controlled by the same person or group from competing in the same competition.

A decision is expected to be made on Palace’s participation by the end of this month.

Our ‘kind and funny’ Alice, 22, went into an NHS hospital to be kept safe – instead she came out dead

JANE Figueiredo’s daughter Alice took her own life in an NHS hospital after more than 10 similar attempts at self-harm.

The 22-year-old, who had been diagnosed with bipolar and an eating disorder, died while under care at the Hepworth Ward at Goodmayes Hospital in Redbridge.

The unit is run by the North East London NHS Foundation Trust (NELFT), which has only twice faced corporate manslaughter charges.

Her family described the former head girl as having a “luminous, kind, thoughtful, generous, warm, humorous and deeply loving presence” and a bright future ahead of her.

Despite her mental health challenges, Alice had periods where she lived a full, motivated and enthusiastic life in the community, they said.

She was a member of the UK youth parliament, chair of the Havering Youth Council and worked with local police to improve relations between the youth community and police

This week, following a seven-month trial at the Old Bailey, NELFT and a ward manager were found guilty of serious safety failings linked to her death.

A jury concluded that not enough had been done to prevent Alice from taking her own life.

Speaking outside court, her mother said: “You are not unassailable. You are not above the law.

“You need to do far, far better to stop failing those people you have a duty of care to.”

She added: “If you don’t make radical changes in your conduct and attitudes towards the people you have a responsibility to care for and keep safe, then people like Alice will continue to come to serious, avoidable harm, or senselessly lose their lives.

“This is happening with impunity, time and again, behind the locked doors of wards and in the community across the country.”

The court heard NELFT repeatedly failed to remove plastic bags from toilets on the ward, despite Alice using them in at least ten previous self-harm attempts.

Ward manager Benjamin Aninakwa, 53, was found guilty of failing to take reasonable care for the health and safety of patients.

He was cleared of gross negligence manslaughter.

NELFT was convicted of failing to ensure the safety of a non-employee, but found not guilty of corporate manslaughter.

Alice was first admitted to the Hepworth Ward in May 2012 with a diagnosis including non-specific eating disorder and bipolar affective disorder, jurors heard.

During her time there, she used plastic bags from the same toilets to self-harm on at least ten occasions – but the court heard they were never properly removed or locked away.

The suicide attempts were recorded in ward notes and other hospital records.

Between admissions, Alice had long periods when hospital treatment wasn’t needed.

She had been applying to go to university and was planning a brighter future, according to reports from the BBC.

Alice was also admitted to the same ward in February 2015, where she was under close observation.

Her death in July 2015 came after eight further incidents involving similar items.

Benjamin, who was subject to a performance improvement plan, had failed to remove plastic bags that could be used for self-harm and failed to ensure incidents of self-harm were recorded, considered and addressed, jurors heard.

‘Tragic series of inactions’

Alice’s stepfather Max Figueiredo said: “We haven’t got the highest charges, but we have moved the dial.”

Detective Inspector Jonathan Potter, who led the Met Police investigation, said: “They have had to endure years of heartbreak before sitting through a long and difficult trial where they heard time and time again about the tragic series of inactions that led to their daughter’s death.”

Priya Singh, lawyer for more than 120 families affected by mental health failings in Essex, said: “We are of the view that Jane should now be included in the Lampard Inquiry as a Core Participant, irrespective of the verdict.”

The jury deliberated for more than 125 hours. Judge Richard Marks KC thanked them for their “immense hard work” and excused them from further jury service for life.

What TV channel is Luxembourg vs Ireland on? Stream, kick-off time and odds for last game before World Cup qualifiers

IRELAND face Luxembourg in their last friendly game before their World Cup qualifiers begin in September.

Heimir Hallgrimsson’s team come into the game on the back of a promising performance against Senegal in the Aviva Stadium.

Luxembourg narrowly lost to Slovenia 1-0 on Friday night and will be looking to get a win today before they play Northern Ireland in their opening World Cup qualifier.

Hallgrimsson has teased there may be changes from the side that faced Senegal as he sees it as an opportunity to “look at new faces.”

Killian Phillips is in the running to make his first start for Ireland after impressing off the bench in his debut against Senegal on Friday.

What time is kick-off?

Kick-off is at 7:45pm Irish time in the Stade de Luxembourg in Luxembourg city.

That will be 8:45pm local time.

What TV channel is Ireland vs Luxembourg on?

The match will be shown live on RTE Two, with coverage starting at 7:30pm.

The match will also be available to stream on the RTE player.

What are the odds?

Ireland are favourites going into the friendly with odds set at 21/20 for Ireland to win the match.

Luxembourg will be looking to record their second win against Ireland in their history but the odds don’t favour them at 10/3.

A draw in the game is set at 11/5.

There is a three way tie for the favourite to be first goalscorer, with Troy Parrott, Evan Ferguson and Sammie Szmodics all 6/1 to score first.

Unwanted History

There is a bit of recent history between the two sides who have faced each other seven times, Ireland winning all but one of their previous meetings.

That exception to the historic trend came as the sides competed in the same 2022 World Cup qualification group.

The sides faced off in an empty Aviva stadium during severe COVID restrictions in the second matchday of the World Cup qualifiers.

Kasey McAteer will be hoping to shine again after getting his first goal on Friday

A late Gerson Rodrigues goal handed all three points to Luxembourg in a 1-0 win, stretching Stephen Kenny’s winless run as Ireland manager to 10 games.

The sides met again in the final match of the qualifiers with both sides out of qualification contention.

Ireland won 3-0 in Luxembourg with goals from Shane Duffy, Chiedozie Ogbene and Callum Robinson put Ireland ahead of Luxembourg in the group only on goal difference.

Recently Luxembourg seems to be a tough place to go for teams with a strong Sweden team losing 1-0 there in March and Northern Ireland drawing 2-2 in November.

Despite Luxembourg finishing rock bottom of their Nations League C group without a win, I certainly wouldn’t be ruling them out of this fixture.

Millions of household unable to get help with water bills due to unfair loophole

MILLIONS of households are unable to get help with their water bills through a vital scheme due to a key loophole.

WaterSure is a scheme which helps households on benefits, those who need to use a lot of water or have a certain number of school aged children with their water bills.

Illustration of a water bill, a tap with a water drop, and a pound sign, showing the cost of water.
Millions of households cannot get help with their bills due to a key loophole

Major suppliers including Thames Water, Severn Trent and Yorkshire Water are part of the scheme, which caps your bills based on the average metered bill for your area.

To apply you need to have a water meter or be waiting to have one installed.

The loophole could mean that millions of households are locked out of the support at a time when water bills have surged.

The average annual water and wastewater bill increased by £123 in April, taking it from £480 to £603.

The hike is equivalent to an increase of around £10 a month.

But around 40% of households in England and Wales do not yet have a water meter, according to the Consumer Council for Water.

Meanwhile, millions of homes are unable to get one installed due to a variety of reasons.

This could be because there is more than one water supply to your home or your property is on a shared supply.

Another reason could be because the pipework in your property is inaccessible, obstructed or in poor condition.

Or your water company may not be able to find a good place to fit your water meter inside or outside your home.

Plus, if you live in a flat and have communal facilities or a shared hot water supply then you may not be able to get a water meter.

In some areas the number of people who can have a water meter installed may be even lower.

Insiders have told The Sun that up to 70% of homes in London are unmeterable.

This could mean millions of households are unable to access the Thames Water scheme, which caps wastewater and water services at £639 a year.

What water bill support is available?

IT'S always worth checking if you qualify for a discount or extra support to help pay your water bill.

Over two million households who qualify to be on discounted social water tariffs aren’t claiming the savings provided, according to the Consumer Council for Water (CCW).

Only 1.3million households are currently issued with a social water tariff – up 19% from the previous year.

And the average household qualifying for the discounted water rates can slash their bills by £160 a year.

Every water company has a social tariff scheme which can help reduce your bills if you’re on a low income and the CCW is calling on customers to take advantage before bills rise in April.

Who’s eligible for help and the level of support offered varies depending on your water company.

Most suppliers also have a pot of money to dish out to thousands of customers who are under pressure from rising costs – and you don’t have to pay it back.

These grants can be worth hundreds of pounds offering a vital lifeline when faced with daunting water bills.

The exact amount you can get depends on where you live and your supplier, as well as your individual circumstances.

Many billpayers across the country could also get help paying off water debts through a little-known scheme and even get the balance written off.

Companies match the payments eligible customers make against the debt on their account to help clear it sooner.

If you’re on a water meter but find it hard to save water as you have a large family or water-dependent medical condition, you may be able to cap your bills through the WaterSure scheme.

Bills are capped at the average amount for your supplier, so the amount you could save will vary.

The Consumer Council for Water estimates that bills are reduced by £307 on average through the scheme.

Severn Trent Water customers also need to have a water meter before they can get help through the scheme.

Customers must have three or more children under the age of 19 living with them and be receiving child benefit or have a medical condition that requires the extra use of water.

If you meet the criteria your bills will be capped at the supplier’s average yearly charge, which is £555.89.

Yorkshire Water also requires you to have a water meter in order to access support through the WaterSure scheme.

To be eligible to have your bill capped someone in your household must receive a benefit or tax credit.

They also need to receive child benefit for three or more children under the age of 19 or someone in your household must have a medical condition that uses a lot of water.

Abdi Mohamed, from disability equality charity Scope, said: “Many disabled people have no choice but to use more water, whether they have a water meter or not.

“All water companies should provide fully accessible customer services to ensure disabled people can access support.

“Consumers cannot choose their water supplier, and more needs to be done to ensure consistency and fairness for all disabled people.

“For many, there’s no escaping high water bills and water companies need to recognise the extra costs of all of their disabled customers.”

What can I do if I am not eligible for the scheme?

Social tariffs

Anyone who is worried about their water bill should contact their water supplier for help.

A spokesperson for the Consumer Council for Water said: “Water companies have a broad range of schemes which can help people who are struggling with their bill.

“More than 1.6 million low-income households are currently receiving cheaper bills through water companies’ social tariffs.”

Companies including Affinity Water, Yorkshire Water, Severn Trent Water and Wessex Water all offer these tariffs.

For example, the SES Water Support scheme will give you a 50% discount on your annual water bill.

To be eligible your annual income must be less than £19,995 if you live outside of London.

If you live in London then you must earn less than £25,207 to be eligible.

Or Wessex Water’s Assist scheme will give you a discount of up to 90% on your bill if you are struggling to pay.

You do not need to receive benefits to apply.

Meanwhile, low income households who are considered to be in financial difficulty can get help through its Assist scheme.

The low rate tariff will be calculated based on their ability to pay, with discounts off the average annual household bill.

The support on offer and criteria to apply vary depending on your supplier but on average you can save around £160 a year.

Payment breaks

Your water company may also be able to offer you a Payment break if you temporarily need to reduce or stop your payments for a limited time.

At United Utilities you can delay your water bill payment for a set period of time, which is agreed in advance.

When you are ready to start paying your bill again you can spread the delayed payments over a longer period to help you catch up and not fall into debt.

The scheme is available to customers with a combined annual household income of below £21,000 and who receive certain means-tested benefits.

You may also be eligible to apply if you have experienced a significant life event, such as losing your job or death in the family.

Meanwhile, South Staffs Water will let you take a payment break of up to three months.

Your eligibility is assessed when you apply and you can only apply for one break a year.

Hardship fund

Some water companies also offer a hardship fund if you fall behind on your water bill and owe more than a certain amount.

At Thames Water you can apply for the Customer Assistance Fund if you owe the supplier more than £120 and receive certain means-tested benefits.

The supplier will work with you to agree on an affordable monthly payment.

This will be based on your income and outgoings and the plan will stay in place for two years.

The payment will cover your current charges and paying towards your debt.

It will not impact your credit score.

Meanwhile, at United Utilities you can apply for help online if you are unable to pay your bill.

You can get help with water and or sewer charges and in certain circumstances you may be able to get white goods and beds.

Only one item is available per applicant.

And multiple weather warnings have been in place for some of May and much of June so far.

It means that Irish holidaygoers hoping to enjoy a summer getaway will likely find themselves disappointed.

There’s a high chance that they will spend most of their holiday indoors to escape the unbearable heat.

The new map, from Meteorologix, shows the entire country scorched by temperatures from 21C up to 40C.

No area is predicted to be below 21C, generally considered heatwave conditions in Ireland.

And some of the worst affected places are popular Spanish tourist destinations.

The map reveals that the area surrounding Cordoba will reach blistering temperatures between 35C and 40C.

And although coastal party hotspot Malaga is forecast to be in the high 20s, the inland area nearby will reach between 35C and 40C.

The area east of Spain’s capital, Madrid, is also set to be blazing hot.

Temperatures there will reach between 35C and 37C, although the wider area will sit at around 33C.

Lastly, the popular city Zaragoza will likely see temperatures climb as high as 40C.

The surrounding area will likely be about 35C, while the wider region if forecast to be about 32C.

But even the cities that won’t see maximum temperatures will still be sizzling.

MULTIPLE WEATHER WARNINGS

Some of the most popular holiday spots are predicted to see highs of 30C.

Coastal Barcelona will see temperatures soar to between 25C and 30C.

And inland Seville is predicted to be between 27C and 30C.

On the east coast, Valencia will have temperatures of 30C to 35C.

There are multiple weather warnings in place from the country’s meteorology department, AEMET.

Posting on X, they said: “Warnings active today in Spain for storms, rain, high temperatures, and coastal hazards.

“Maximum warning level: orange.”

The orange weather warnings are in place for the regions of Aragon, Castilla y Lyon, Cataluna, Pais Vasco, and La Rioja.
