Majorca removes sunbeds and parasols from its top beaches

FOUR beaches around the capital of Majorca are removing around 1,700 loungers.

Palma’s city administration has announced that it plans to reduce the number of sun beds and umbrellas by 20 per cent next year.

This comes after increased complaints from residents[/caption]

This is because residents in the local areas close to popular beaches have complained that they struggle to find space for their beach towels due to the large number of chargeable loungers and umbrellas.

It has also been noted that the beaches are eroding due to climate change.

For example, storms, rising sea levels and erosion have taken a toll on the six-kilometre-long Playa de Palma.

And whilst this year there are less sunbeds, in 2026 the numbers will be even lower.

According to Bild, Playa de Palma is set to lose the most sunbeds – reducing 6,000 to 4,436.

Out of 2,503 parasols, only 2,218 will remain.

In Cala Major, the number of sunbeds will decrease from 300 to 250.

Elsewhere in Palma’s coastal suburb of Ciutat Jardi, 12 of the 300 sun loungers will go and so will six parasols.

The at Cala Estància, in Can Pastilla, there will be only 132 sun loungers instead of 150 and 66 parasols instead of 75.

Other beaches are also looking to reduce sunbed and parasol numbers.

For example, Cab Pere Antoni city beach, which is not the responsibility of the city administration, will also be more than halved.

The reduction in sun beds is likely to have an impact on sun bed wars that often dominate beaches at popular Spanish resorts.

It could make more wars occur as the loungers become more competitive, or alternatively forced people to bring their own loungers to beaches.

‘Premium loungers’ in Cala Major and on Playa de Palma could also be introduced in the future though.

These loungers would be more comfortable and spaced further apart.

However, they would be priced much higher than average loungers.

The news follows an announcement from a Spanish campaign group leading a movement against overtourism in Majorca to host a large scale protest this week, that will see 60 organisations meet and protest together.

The peaceful side of Majorca has also been revealed – from rugged mountains to spectacular food and cove that is island’s best kept-secret.

Plus, a couple booked £47 flights to Majorca for the day ‘just to sunbathe’ after miserable UK summer.

Exact date to qualify for this year’s Winter Fuel Payment following MAJOR shake-up

THE government has revealed the exact date that qualifies pensioners for this year’s Winter Fuel Payment after a major shake-up.

The Chancellor Rachel Reeves has confirmed the up to £300 payment will be made to those with an income of or below £35,000 this winter in a huge u-turn.

Eligibility criteria for the Winter Fuel Payment has been shaken up[/caption]

The free cash was only paid to state pensioners eligible for Pension Credit in 2024/25.

But ministers have faced backlash and been accused of leaving older households out in the cold after changing the eligibility criteria.

The government says the new criteria for this year means around nine million in England and Wales will qualify for a payment.

Eligibility is based on a person’s age and where they live during the qualifying week.

This year, that week is the third of September (September 15 to September 21).

A person needs to have reached state pension age by September 21 to be eligible for a payment.

Of course, your income will need to be at or below the £35,000 threshold by this date as well.

Pensioners aged up to 80 will receive a Winter Fuel Payment worth £200 while those aged 81 or over will get £300.

Pensioners above the £35,000 threshold will receive the Winter Fuel Payment but have it deducted automatically via PAYE, or a self-assessment tax return.

Pensioners who want to opt out of getting a payment will also be able to do so.

The government says it will reveal further details on how they can do this at a later date.

Ms Reeves said: “Targeting Winter Fuel Payments was a tough decision but the right decision because of the inheritance we had been left by the previous government.

“It is also right that we continue to means test this payment so that it is targeted and fair, rather than restoring eligibility to everyone including the wealthiest.

“But we have now acted to expand the eligibility of the Winter Fuel Payment so no pensioner on a lower income will miss out.

Biggest u-turn in history

By Jack Elsom, Political Editor

AS political u-turns go, Rachel Reeves’ retreat on winter fuel payments will surely go down as one of the biggest – and messiest – in history.

Her first act as Chancellor to snatch the cold weather cash from 10million pensioners has today been spectacularly dumped.

Nine million OAP will now get the benefit, meaning all but the richest will claw back the £200-£300 sum.

With a price tag of £1.25billion, this whole palaver has only saved the Treasury £450million.

It’s chicken feed in the grand scheme of things, and a tenth of the annual migrant hotel bill.

But the political cost has been devastating.

Labour insiders trace their spanking at last month’s local elections back to Ms Reeves’ toxic decision in the weeks after the election.

That the winter fuel policy was still coming up on doorsteps 10 months later was a sign it was destined for the shredder.

Yet rather than ripping off the plaster cleanly, the past few weeks have seen an agonising u-turn mired in chaos and confusion.

Four years is a long time until the next general election, and Sir Keir Starmer and Ms Reeves will be hoping voters would have since moved on.

But – even with today’s backing down – the winter fuel debacle is likely to live long in the memory of the electorate and haunt Labour for a very long time.

“This will mean over three quarters of pensioners receiving the payment in England and Wales later this winter.”

The decision to limit the Winter Fuel Payment to only those who claimed Pension Credit was one of Labour’s first acts in Government.

Ministers made the move in a bid to balance what was described as a £22billion “black hole” in the public finances.

The shake-up meant the number of pensioners receiving the payment was reduced by around 10million, from 11.4million to 1.5million.

The Treasury claims the new arrangement will cost £1.25billion in England and Wales, while means-testing winter fuel will save the taxpayer £450 million.

Trolls call me a ‘paedophile’ for breastfeeding my ‘grown woman’ daughter – she has tantrums if she doesn’t get my milk

AN INFLUENCER has been branded a “paedophile” for breastfeeding her three-year-old daughter.

Madison Simpson, 22, shares daughter Amaya with boyfriend Jermaine, and has faced backlash for her extended breastfeeding journey.

While some cruel trolls have called her a “bad mum”, others have likened her daughter to a “grown woman”, and even called her “obese”, because of her size.

Now Madison – who acknowledged that her daughter is “bigger than average” – has said she decided to stop breastfeeding Amaya, because her milk habit was “turning into an addiction”.

She went cold turkey, but cutting Amaya off didn’t go down well with the toddler.

“Amaya gets very mad if she doesn’t get my boob,” Madison sighed to What’s The Jam.

“She’ll throw a tantrum, refuse to sleep; it’s exhausting.

“I feel like she has done it now for too long and I want my body back.

“Right now, she’s not very happy about it… But it had to happen at some point.”

Madison, who is also mum to four-year-old Amirion, admitted she used to cry about the horrible comments she got from trolls online.

And it’s now made her afraid to even leave her home.

“People bash me as their mum and constantly put us down,” she said.

“I have severe anxiety now, which has made it harder for me to be in public.

“So I just stay home.

“People don’t seem to understand that breastfeeding can continue until the age of four, or even seven, in some countries.

“They just used to stare at me, though and give such a horrid look.

“And online, it’s even worse.

“It’s my child’s choice when they stop – or my own – not anybody else’s.”

Madison first fell pregnant aged 17, and when Amaya was born, she was told that breastfeeding would be the most beneficial for baby as there were complications relating to her growth during the pregnancy.

And despite being criticised for her decision to breastfeed Amaya to her current age, Madison won’t be put off doing the same with her next baby.

She also shared some of her other controversial parenting styles, such as giving her children as much screen time as they want and allowing them to eat what and when they want.

“They don’t really cuss, but they have picked up on a few words and phrases and repeat them around the house,” she admitted.

“I don’t tell them off, though, it’s quite funny.

“And they don’t have a bedtime.

“Often, it’ll be around 11 before they go to sleep.”
