Actress Amanda Seyfried recently returned to television with the crime-drama series Long Bright River. However, she is fondly remembered for her role as the unintelligent high schooler Karen Smith in the 2004 movie Mean Girls. In a recent interview, Seyfried reflected on her appearance in the cult classic comedy.
Seyfried revealed that she had great admiration for her co-stars from the Tina Fey-penned movie, which was a commercial success. However, the actress also admitted that she still hasn’t been fairly compensated for her contributions. Here is why Amanda Seyfried’s gratitude for the Mean Girls role turned into bitterness.
Amanda Seyfried admits she is bitter as Paramount still owes her for Mean Girls
Actress Amanda Seyfried defied expectations with her performance as Elizabeth Holmes in the limited series The Dropout, which earned her an Emmy and Golden Globe award. However, she gained recognition for playing the ditzy blonde, Karen Smith, in 2004’s Mean Girls.

The 2004 comedy movie, written by SNL alum Tina Fey, stars Lindsay Lohan as Cady Heron, a naive teenager who must deal with high school cliques. It grossed $130 million at the box office against a $18 million budget (via The Numbers), making it a commercial success.
Despite its success, Paramount Pictures allegedly hasn’t properly compensated Seyfried, who voiced her displeasure during a recent interview with Variety.
I really love seeing my face on people’s T-shirts. I mean, I’m a little resentful because Paramount still owes me some money.
Seyfried made the above statement during an Actors on Actors discussion with Adam Brody. The actress revealed that she was allegedly not paid for her likeness on the movie’s merchandise. As a result, Seyfried was slightly bitter with Paramount but suggested that, since she was young at the time, she did not negotiate her share in the merchandise.
Amanda Seyfried remains grateful for the experience of working on Mean Girls
In the same interview, Seyfried pointed out that merchandise from the movie was extremely popular. Moreover, the first installment gained new fans with the rise of streaming. As a result, Seyfried’s bitterness over the situation is understandable.

Despite being bitter, the actress revealed that Mean Girls remained one of her favorite movies she has worked on. Seyfried shared similar sentiments during an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast a couple of months ago.
The Mamma Mia actress explained that she was grateful for the experience she had on the Tina Fey-written comedy, as it was her first time working on a film set.
I truly think the experience of making it has nothing to do with how well it did, for sure.
Seyfried made the above statement, expressing gratitude for how well-received her first movie role was. At the same time, she added that all the cast members got along really well, making it an extremely memorable experience for her. Seyfried will next appear in the psychological thriller movie The Housemaid alongside Sydney Sweeney.
Mean Girls is currently streaming on Paramount+ (USA).
