The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup promises to be a clash of continents, cultures and footballing styles, and the opening match of the tournament perfectly illustrates this with Al Ahly of Egypt clashing with Inter Miami of the MLS.

Al Ahly recently secured a third consecutive – and record 45th in total – Egyptian Premier League title, underlining their dominance domestically. 

But it was far from a perfect season, with the Red Eagles knocked out of the CAF Champions League at the semi-final stage on away goals to Mamelodi Sundowns. The defeat cost Marcel Koller his job, with the Swiss first replaced by Emad El Nahhas on an interim basis, and latterly José Riveiro.

Riveiro was only appointed at the end of May, so it remains to be seen how much influence the Spaniard will have on the team ahead of facing Miami. 

Inter Miami are also a team in search of the right formula. 

Domestically, they secured the 2024 MLS Supporters’ Shield with a record 74 points. But despite being the strongest looking team in the MLS throughout last season, they couldn’t back that up in the MLS Cup – exiting the competition to Atlanta United in the opening round.

Gerardo Martino departed the club shortly after for personal reasons. The Argentine was replaced as manager by his compatriot, Javier Mascherano. But it’s fair to say things haven’t gone totally to plan for the former Liverpool and Barcelona midfielder. 

Inter have picked up 29 points from 16 matches in this season’s MLS. They have won eight, drawn five and lost three. 

With a forward line boasting Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez, it’s no surprise to see they are one of the highest scorers in the league with 36 goals. The problem has been conceding goals, Inter’s defence has been breached 27 times. They have one of the worst defensive records in the Eastern Conference.

On a positive note, Inter have found some better form in recent weeks and come into this match on the back of two wins.

Al Ahly haven’t played competitively since May 28th – if nothing else, they should be fresher of the two teams. On the flip side, Inter Miami are into the thick of their MLS season and should be battle hardened as they switch their attention to the FIFA Club World Cup. With this being the opening match of a new competition, there are a lot of unknowns coming into this clash. But some things we do know are that Inter Miami scores lots of goals, and also concedes plenty as well.

Luis Suárez isn’t quite as prolific as his South American teammate Lionel Messi, but the Uruguayan comes into the Club World Cup in good recent form.

After two matches without a goal contribution, Suárez has found his form again with three goals and one assist in his previous two matches.

Suárez was on target twice, and assisted once, in Inter’s 4-2 win over Montreal. He also found the back of the net in his team’s 5-1 win over Columbus in their most recent outing.

It’s hard to make predictions for an Inter Miami match without mentioning Lionel Messi. Yes, it’s an obvious tip, but look at the stats and his recent form.

Messi has scored five goals in his last three MLS matches. He takes any set pieces around the box, and he will be extra keen to make his mark in his current adopted home city.
