INTEENATIONAL Master Ricardo de Guzman delivered a thrilling display of skill and endurance as he took on multiple challengers in a simultaneous exhibition during the final evaluation of the first batch of the 2026 Milo Checkmate Chess Clinicsheld over the weekend at Starmall Edsa Shaw in Mandaluyong.

Demonstrating masterful composure across the boards, De Guzman amassed an impressive 18.5 points, conceding only three losses and one draw.

Rising to the occasion were 11-year-old Miguel Magsino, 10-year-old Naethaniel Louise Dapon, and 9-year-old Franco Miguel Mina, who each secured victories after the IM fell by time forfeit.

Meanwhile, 11-year-old Ted Cedric Magbuhos showcased remarkable poise, forcing a hard-earned draw after 35 strategic moves in a Caro-Kann battle.

For their exceptional performances, Magsino, Dapon, and Mina were awarded gold medals, while Magbuhos proudly received a silver—clear proof that the future of chess is bright and brimming with young talent.

The exhibition marked the exciting culmination of the program’s first batch in a one-day celebration organized by the Metropolitan Chess Center (MCC) and supported by Milo, the country’s leading energy drink.

Following the simul, participants deepened their learning by reviewing their games with IM Mari Joseph Turqueza, whose expert analysis provided valuable insights to further sharpen their competitive edge.

Rising Stars Across All Levels

Nine-year-old Alexavier Orivida dominated the Intermediate section with a flawless four points in four rounds. Dwayne Tyrone Torres claimed second place, while Ma. Paula Tupas secured third.

In Beginners 2 Group A, 15-year-old John Reign Tayoto and 7-year-old Alonzo Posadas emerged as co-champions after tying with four points each. Magsino finished strong in second, with Magbuhos and Amber Swayy Roan placing third and fourth.

Beginners 2 Group B: Naethaniel Louise Dapon (1st), Brent Kenzo Cruz (2nd), Lucas Bracero (3rd), Lucas Matteo Mercene (4th)

Beginners 2 Group C: Ezra Allan de Guzman (1st), Franco Miguel Mina (2nd)

Beginners 1 Group A: Kai Aiden Sontillano (1st), Gaebrielle Louisse Dapon (2nd), Patricia Manapat (3rd)

Beginners 1 Group B: Daenielle Louisse Dapon (1st), Ellaria Hope Soberano (2nd)

All winners proudly received medals courtesy of Milo, celebrating not just victories but the discipline, focus, and courage each young player demonstrated throughout the clinic.

Next Challenge Awaits

Excitement continues to build as registration is now in full swing for rated players in the 1st MCC FIDE-Rated Standard 1800 Below Tournament which will be held on next weekend, Feb. 21-22, at the Starmall Edsa Shaw in Mandaluyong.

With a total prize pot of P30,000—including a champion’s purse of P7,000 plus a gold medal—the event promises intense competition and rewarding opportunities. Cash prizes will be awarded through ten places, along with special recognition for top performers across eight categories.
