  • Gold Cards will expire after 31 August 2026, with no further extensions granted.
  • New cards are available free of charge at major retailers using only a valid South African ID.
  • Account balances move to the new Black Cards automatically and are protected from unauthorised deductions.

Postbank has announced that the final phase of replacing SASSA Gold Cards with the new Postbank Black Cards will commence on 29 April.

Beneficiaries still using the old cards must migrate by the 31 August 2026 deadline to avoid losing access to their social grant payments.

Thamsanqa Cele, Postbank’s Chief Commercial Officer, emphasised the urgency of the migration, noting that the replacement programme is part of a broader process initiated in late 2024.

Beneficiaries who have already received their Black Cards are not affected and will continue to enjoy benefits such as three free withdrawals and one free monthly statement.

To collect a new card, recipients can visit service points within Shoprite, Checkers, Pick n Pay, Boxer, or SPAR.

No paperwork is required, and cards can be issued in any province regardless of the original grant application location. Once collected, the Black Cards are ready for immediate use.

Postbank has also issued a security warning against potential scams. Official Black Cards are always branded with “Postbank” and never require the completion of forms for activation.

Beneficiaries can locate their nearest replacement site by dialling *120*355# or contact the bank directly at 0800 53 54 55 for assistance.
