A probe is underway following a disturbing incident in which a police officer allegedly assaulted a civilian at a police station in Mpumalanga.
The alleged assault, which was captured on video and has been widely shared on social media, reportedly took place earlier this month at the Volksrust Police Station.
The footage has sparked outrage, with calls for accountability.
In a statement released this week, the South African Police Service confirmed that an internal investigation has been launched to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“In addition to the internal investigation, a criminal investigation is also underway to ensure all aspects of this matter are addressed transparently.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPD) has been notified of the incident and is expected to conduct a parallel investigation.
The involvement of IPID is aligned with SAPS’s commitment to accountability and transparency in the policing profession,” the statement read.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli said SAPS remains committed to maintaining public trust.
“We are determined to act swiftly and decisively against any wrongdoing,” he added.
