Sizwe Dhlomo and the team unpack the subtle moments that signal the transition into adulthood
Katlego Sekhu

Sizwe Dhlomo recently reflected on how, when you are younger, you cannot wait to grow up, until you actually do.
He shared a recent interaction that made him think. “Yesterday I got a call from an OG. Somebody who used to give us advice about things, and now they were asking me for advice on an opportunity they had been offered.”
That moment led him to ask the team a simple question: when do you realise you are old?
Mpho Maboi said it clicked for her when her parents started involving her in family discussions, including major decisions.
“Another moment was after I had my child and my mother started speaking to me as one parent to another. It changes the dynamic of the relationship because now you are engaging on a parenting level,” she shared.
For Mbali Thethane, it was a more sobering shift.
“Because my parents are quite young, when they lost their parents, I had to step in. I became their parent,” she said.
The team then asked listeners to reflect on their own experiences. When did it hit you that you were grown? Did life show you, or did you have to figure it out on your own?
