‘Rent-a-Girlfriend’ Might Not Be Able to Recover From the Major Blunder It Just Made

The wider world was not aware of how dedicated a fanbase the Rent-a-Girlfriend manga has always had until this very unfortunate day. It’s one of the most infamous romance manga ever written, for how cheap the character writing is. Not only because it’s a harem, but even the overall storytelling may come off as nothing more than a guilty pleasure.

However, something even worse just happened, which is also heartbreaking for readers who’ve been sticking with it all this time. Social media has gone into a complete state of chaos after the 380th chapter of this series was released today, on June 11. The moment fans had been waiting for—the final confession scene—ended with a rejection!

The author can’t just end a romance manga with rejection

You cannot be defending a series, especially a romance series, that puts you through 379 chapters of weekly hell only for the MC to be rejected! What kind of blasphemy is this? Furthermore, the recent 50 or so chapters of the manga even had a whole arc preparing and building up for this final confession moment.

There’s no way we got a rejection after all that! Despite starting off as a harem series, in its recent 100-ish chapters, Rent-a-Girlfriend almost turned into a full-on romance. There were even some really cute and wholesome moments in these past few chapters that brought some charm to the series.

Kazuya had always been a literal trash MC, but even then, he got some really interesting glow-up moments because of this whole confession arc. On the other hand, Mizuhara turned into an even more believable love interest for fans.

The way the series showed how both of them equally care for each other, despite not being able to show it directly, struck a chord with many. It’s true that Kazuya still remains a helpless MC who can’t even make a single decision on his own, but thanks to Mizuhara’s influence, he was showing some minor improvements. Then where did it go wrong?

Was it intentional or solely done for the readers’ attention?

Many fans on social media have opted to claim that the series had always been a study of feminism in our society, and they might not be wrong, judging from these latest chapters. After all, you’re never entitled to be someone’s love interest just because they’ve done so much for you.

It’s true, Kazuya went above and beyond to show how much he actually cares for Mizuhara. He even became the only shoulder Mizuhara could lean on in her toughest times. But you must not forget that Mizuhara never asked for any of that.

You might be really in love with someone, but that doesn’t mean they’re obliged to feel the same about you. However, that is just plain bad as a romance story, because that’s what it has always been marketed as.

No one in their right mind wants a realistically sad ending for a romance series like this, especially after investing all their time. People want escapism, while this somewhat showed us an unnecessarily harsh reality.

But the thing is, it’s highly possible the author never even intended to end it with a rejection! He might’ve done it solely for messing around with his own audience. Rent-a-Girlfriend was never meant to be like this to begin with, so as of now, this twist also makes zero sense. The series has been milked for years already, and this latest chapter might just further prolong it.

Rent-a-Girlfriend manga is currently available to read on Kodansha USA.
